https://i.imgur.com/dtloDwvm.jpeg

🌙 SELENA: NOTES FROM AN UNTIMELY BUSINESS TRIP
🌙 DAY 5 — “NOW I UNDERSTAND”
Julie’s Story — Ramida Pi
On the final day of my assignment as Selena's visiting reporter, I opened my notebook and realized something strange.
I'd stopped writing mostly about machines.
Then Julie called me over.
“You need to see this.”
The crowd was gathered around Ramida Pi, a peculiar triangular Lunar Variation covered with attachments that didn't appear to belong together.
“What does it do?” I asked.
Julie smiled. “You're asking the wrong question again.”
Apparently I'd come full circle.
Ramida Pi wasn't a finished invention.
That was its purpose.
Each civilization that used it was expected to alter it—adding something from its own technology, experience or needs. One world improved its energy system. Another its navigation. Selena redesigned the frame.
Nobody owned the final idea because there was no final version.
I looked at the Guild.
Tara was proposing an improvement. John was explaining why it wouldn't work. DeNae was fixing the practical problem in John's solution. Laura had noticed another possibility. Lala was arguing with everybody. Oksana was smiling.
Julie stood beside me.
“Now do you understand?”
I did.
I had come to Selena to report on inventions.
Instead, Julie and her friends had spent five days showing me the people behind them.
My editor was expecting:
THE FIVE GREATEST INVENTIONS AT THE GRAND MASTERS’ SHOW.
I crossed it out.
My new title was:
THE PEOPLE WHO SEE THINGS DIFFERENTLY.
Julie read it and smiled.
“Much better.”
Five days ago, that would have annoyed me.
Now I simply smiled back.
This reporter had arrived on Selena because someone else got sick.
I left wondering whether, for once in my career, I'd ended up exactly where I was supposed to be.

🌙 SELENA: NOTES FROM AN UNTIMELY BUSINESS TRIP
🌙 DAY 5 — “NOW I UNDERSTAND”
Laura’s Story — Ramida Pi
On the final day of my reporting assignment, Laura found the fifth symbol.
Three interlocking circles were engraved beneath Ramida Pi.
“So this is where our mystery ends,” I said.
Laura shook her head.
“Maybe it's where it begins.”
Ramida Pi looked unfinished because it was unfinished.
Its creator had deliberately designed it so every civilization would change it.
Jovian craftsmen contributed pressure technology. Selena engineers improved its energy system. Visitors from other colonies added navigation, communications and tools.
No version was considered the correct one.
I finally understood our symbol.
Different knowledge.
Different experience.
One solution.
The Tachyon Pliers combined mechanics and time.
The Pipe Cutter solved cutting by not cutting.
The Hand Shower cleaned without water.
The Jovian locksmith opened a lock by ignoring the lock.
And Ramida Pi existed only because nobody insisted there was one right way to build it.
Laura looked pleased.
“You solved it.”
“We solved it.”
Behind us, the rest of the Guild were already debating what they would add to Ramida Pi.
I closed my notebook.
Five days earlier, I'd arrived on Selena looking for five unrelated stories.
Laura had noticed what this reporter hadn't:
They were one story all along.
My article finally had its title:
THE PEOPLE WHO SEE THINGS DIFFERENTLY
And beneath it I wrote one last sentence:
The greatest thing Selena's Masters build may not be their inventions. It may be the idea that nobody sees the whole answer alone.

🌙 SELENA: NOTES FROM AN UNTIMELY BUSINESS TRIP
👽 DAY 4 — “WHY THEM?”
Lala’s Story — Locksmith from Jupiter
By Day Four, I had accepted two things about my Selena assignment.
I understood very little.
And Lala would comment on all of it.
We were watching several technicians struggle with a sealed chamber when a Locksmith from Jupiter arrived.
He didn't touch the lock.
He asked, “What is the door waiting for?”
Lala whispered, “Maybe flowers.”
I ignored her.
“Chocolate?”
“Lala.”
“I'm brainstorming.”
The Jovian studied a pressure gauge and made one tiny adjustment.
Click.
The door opened.
Lala stopped smiling.
“Okay. That's impressive.”
On Jupiter, the locksmith explained, enormous atmospheric pressure made every doorway a balancing problem. He saw something the Selena technicians hadn't because his home world had taught him to think about doors differently.
“So the lock wasn't broken?” I asked.
“No.”
“The door wasn't stuck?”
“No.”
Lala sighed.
“Four days on this planet and nothing is ever what it's called.”
That may have been the most accurate statement I'd heard all week.
I wrote:
Jupiter taught him to see pressure where everyone else saw a lock.
Lala looked over my shoulder.
No joke this time.
“That's actually good.”
I stared at her.
“Was that a compliment?”
“Don't get used to it.”
Four days into my assignment, this reporter finally understood why Selena invited craftsmen from across inhabited space.
Sometimes you need someone from another world simply because they're capable of seeing a different one.

🌙 SELENA: NOTES FROM AN UNTIMELY BUSINESS TRIP
🌙 DAY 5 — “NOW I UNDERSTAND”
Lala’s Story — Ramida Pi
On the final day of my Selena assignment, I found Lala staring at Ramida Pi.
“Don't,” I said.
“I haven't said anything.”
“That's what worries me.”
The strange triangular Lunar Variation was surrounded by engineers arguing about what it was supposed to do.
Lala listened for a while.
Then she said, “Maybe that's the point.”
I stared at her.
“Please don't accidentally be right again.”
She was.
Ramida Pi had deliberately been left unfinished.
Every world that received one was expected to modify it. Add something. Remove something. Improve something.
There was no final Ramida Pi.
The argument surrounding it wasn't a problem.
The argument was the invention.
Tara immediately suggested an addition.
John immediately rejected it.
Julie proposed another.
DeNae improved Julie's idea.
Laura noticed a flaw.
Oksana quietly suggested something that made everybody stop and reconsider.
Lala turned to me.
“See?”
“See what?”
“Ramida Pi.”
She pointed at the Guild.
I laughed.
She was right again.
Seven people. Seven opinions. Frequent disagreement.
And somehow, after five days, they had helped this completely unqualified reporter understand Selena better than any technical manual could have.
I opened my notebook and wrote the title of my article:
THE PEOPLE WHO SEE THINGS DIFFERENTLY
Lala read it.
“I expect a mention.”
“You're in it.”
“Photograph?”
“Unfortunately.”
“Good photograph?”
“Let's not push it.”
She grinned.
I had arrived on Selena because another reporter got sick.
Five days later, I was leaving with the best story I'd written in years.
And one final lesson:
If Lala says something ridiculous, don't laugh too quickly.
There's an alarming chance she's right.

🌙 DAY 5 — “APPARENTLY WE REOPENED THE GALAXY”

The Simplexus looked harmless.

That should have concerned me.

Oksana and Ziv connected it to the ancient station.

One light came on.

Then ten.

Then hundreds.

Then thousands.

John stopped writing.

Rowan stopped talking.

Tara stopped moving.

For approximately three seconds.

Then a ship appeared.

The first visitors stepped through and informed us they had been trying to reach Selena for 4,813 years.

I looked at Tara.

She looked delighted.

Of course she did.

By sunset, I had officially reclassified the pastry supply as diplomatic resources.

https://upforme.ru/uploads/0019/3c/8c/7246/78175.png

🌙 EPILOGUE — “SELENA REOPENS THE STARS”

By the end of the Review, seven ships were waiting beyond Selena.

John crossed out his original article title and wrote:

SELENA REOPENS THE STARS

Tara got emotional.

John objected.

Rowan experienced “atmospheric moisture.”

Oksana and Ziv disappeared into star maps.

The Cleaning Assistant remained beside my boot.

I gave it a crumb.

We are not discussing that.

Ziv also claimed she had not joined the Guild.

Then she took another pastry.

Also not discussing that.

We arrived for a five-day exhibition.

We left having reopened an ancient interstellar network.

This was not in my planner.

🌙 DAY 5 — “THE STARS REMEMBERED SELENA”

By Day Five, I had stopped pretending this was still a business trip.

John had stopped pretending too.

He was still carrying the notebook.

He was still asking questions.

He was still trying very hard to use phrases like “historically significant infrastructure” instead of “ancient alien star gate.”

But the fight had gone out of him.

Not completely.

Just enough.

We stood beneath Selena in the ancient docking station Ziv had opened the day before.

The great gate was still open.

Stars burned beyond it.

The old platforms stretched into darkness.

And somewhere very far away, something had answered.

That should have been enough excitement for one week.

Naturally, Selena had scheduled the Moon Variations presentation for that morning.

John looked at the program.

Then at the station.

Then at us.

“No.”

DeNae adjusted the strap on her supply bag.

“You keep saying that like it matters.”

“It used to matter.”

“Before Tara?”

“Yes.”

“That was a long time ago.”

I chose not to take that personally.

Rowan was already inspecting the ancient platform rails.

Oksana and Ziv were standing at one of the central consoles, discussing the signal we had received.

The Cleaning Assistant sat near DeNae’s boots with its little snack pouch attached.

It had become part of the expedition.

DeNae still denied this.

Then the Review delegation arrived carrying the Simplexus from the Moon Variations collection.

It was beautiful.

Small enough to hold in two hands.

A geometric core of dark metal, glasslike crystal, and shifting silver light.

At first glance, it looked unfinished.

Fragments fitted together around an empty center.

Ancient symbols ran across its surface beside newer Selena markings.

I immediately wanted to touch it.

John looked at me.

“No.”

“I didn’t move.”

“You thought about moving.”

Ziv glanced over.

“He is learning.”

The master presenting Simplexus explained that the object had been reconstructed from fragments discovered across Selena decades earlier.

Nobody knew what it originally was.

Some pieces had been found beneath old settlements.

Others inside abandoned survey tunnels.

A few had simply turned up in collections with no record of where they came from.

Generations of Selena engineers had studied them.

Every few years, someone proposed a new theory.

Power regulator.

Navigation tool.

Communication device.

Mapping core.

Artificial intelligence interface.

Nobody had ever been able to prove any of them.

So they rebuilt it.

Not because they knew what it did.

Because they wanted to find out.

That, apparently, was the whole point of Moon Variations.

Take something known.

Or almost known.

Change the assumptions.

Try another arrangement.

See what becomes possible.

I looked at Simplexus.

Then at the docking station.

Then at Oksana.

She was already thinking the same thing.

“No,” John said.

Oksana had not spoken.

He pointed at her.

“I recognize that expression now.”

Ziv looked between Simplexus and the ancient central console.

“There is a socket.”

John closed his eyes.

“Of course there is.”

We found it at the center of the station.

A recessed geometric space surrounded by symbols.

The exact shape of Simplexus.

DeNae stared at it.

“So every strange object we found this week just happens to fit into an ancient system?”

Rowan smiled.

“I think that means we’re doing very well.”

“I think it means we should stop.”

Nobody stopped.

Oksana took the first readings.

Ziv checked the docking gate.

John documented everything.

DeNae moved the Cleaning Assistant several feet farther away “just in case.”

Rowan stood beside me.

“Do you think it opens another door?”

“I hope not.”

He looked surprised.

I smiled.

“I hope it does something bigger.”

John heard that.

“No.”

The Simplexus was placed into the ancient console.

Nothing happened.

For three seconds.

Then the entire station lit up.

Stars appeared beneath our feet.

Not reflections.

Not projections exactly.

A map.

A vast field of light unfolded across the floor and climbed the walls.

One point glowed above Selena.

Then another appeared far away.

Then ten.

Then fifty.

Then hundreds.

Lines began connecting them.

The chamber filled with constellations nobody on Selena had seen before.

Oksana stared at the readings.

“It’s a navigation network.”

Ziv shook her head slowly.

“More than that.”

A line of light shot outward from Selena.

One distant star answered.

Then another.

Then another.

The ancient docking platforms began waking.

Power flowed through systems dormant for thousands of years.

Signals filled the chamber.

John stopped writing.

Actually stopped.

The man had documented alien plants, gravity locks, ancient doors, and a sarcastic Jupiterian locksmith.

But this—

this made him forget the notebook.

DeNae whispered, “How many are there?”

Oksana looked across the map.

“Hundreds.”

Ziv corrected her.

“Thousands.”

Rowan was completely silent.

Which was how I knew this was serious.

Then the gate sounded.

One deep tone.

A docking signal.

Something was coming.

John found his voice.

“Coming from where?”

Ziv studied the display.

“I don’t know.”

“That is not comforting.”

“It was not intended to be.”

The signal grew stronger.

Outside the gate, the stars distorted.

Light folded inward.

And a ship appeared.

Not arrived.

Appeared.

Elegant and enormous, with sweeping silver structures that curved like wings around a glowing center.

DeNae grabbed my arm.

For once, I did not make fun of her.

Because I was holding onto Rowan.

John looked like he was deciding whether to run or interview it.

Oksana remained at the console.

Ziv stood beside her, perfectly still.

The ship docked.

The ancient platform connected automatically.

A door opened.

Beautiful extraterrestrials stepped through.

Tall.

Graceful.

Almost luminous.

Their clothing shimmered like starlight over water.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

One of them looked around the station.

Then at us.

Then at the glowing map of the network.

Their expression changed.

Relief.

Absolute relief.

They said something in a language I did not understand.

The station translated.

“Finally.”

There was a pause.

“We have been attempting to reach this station for 4,813 years.”

I looked at John.

John looked at me.

I opened my mouth.

He pointed at me.

“No.”

“I was only going to say—”

“No.”

Ziv laughed.

The extraterrestrial delegation stepped farther into the station.

More signals began arriving.

More routes lit up.

More forgotten stations answered Selena.

And suddenly I understood Simplexus.

It had caused so much discussion because everyone thought it was an invention.

It wasn’t.

Not really.

It was a memory.

A piece of something Selena had forgotten.

The Masters had not created a new way to reach the stars.

They had rebuilt the part that reminded Selena how.

John finally opened his notebook again.

His hands were slower now.

More careful.

He looked around at the masters.

At Oksana.

At Ziv.

At Rowan.

At DeNae and her ridiculous adopted vacuum.

At me.

And for once, nobody made a joke.

The Great Masters Review had spent five days teaching us the same lesson over and over.

A Laser Cutter could be more than a cutting tool.

A Cleaning Assistant could reveal a map.

A Mixer Tap could create a world.

A lock could be opened by someone who understood gravity differently.

And a strange collection of fragments could reconnect civilizations.

The best ideas did not come from everyone thinking the same way.

They came from someone looking at the thing everyone else already knew—

and seeing something else.

Then the Cleaning Assistant bumped DeNae’s boot.

She looked down.

It chirped.

She sighed and gave it a crumb.

The moment passed.

I smiled.

Much better.

By sunset, there were three ships waiting beyond the station.

John had filled nearly every page of his notebook.

Oksana and Ziv were already comparing star routes.

Rowan had somehow started learning the names of the visiting delegations.

DeNae had begun rationing pastries for “diplomatic purposes.”

And me?

I stood beneath a map of thousands of stars and thought about the first thing John had written when we left the Guild Hall:

Observe. Interview. Record facts. Avoid unnecessary complications.

We had managed three out of four.

Which, for us, was excellent.

📓 TARA’S HANDY DANDY JOURNAL — DAY 5

FOUND ITEM: 🌙 Simplexus — Moon Variations collection

WHAT EVERYONE THOUGHT IT WAS:
Power system. Navigation tool. Communication device. Possibly something nobody understood.

WHAT IT ACTUALLY IS:
A reconstructed interface/navigation core for Selena’s ancient interstellar transit network.

IMPORTANT DETAIL:
Nobody invented it from nothing.

The Masters rebuilt it from fragments because they were willing to keep asking what else those fragments could be.

RESULT:
One star connection.

Then ten.

Then hundreds.

Then thousands.

Selena is connected again.

FIRST ARRIVAL:
Elegant extraterrestrial visitors who have apparently been trying to reach this station for 4,813 years.

This seems excessive.

OKSANA STATUS:
Has found enough ancient technology to remain happy for approximately the next century.

ZIV STATUS:
Very smug about the station working.

Claims she did not know Simplexus would reactivate the entire network.

I mostly believe her.

ROWAN STATUS:
Briefly speechless.

Documented because this may never happen again.

DeNAE STATUS:
Has upgraded pastries from “snacks” to “interplanetary diplomatic supplies.”

CLEANING ASSISTANT STATUS:
Still hers.

Do not let her tell you otherwise.

JOHN STATUS:
Has stopped correcting me when I say “ancient alien star station.”

Victory.

WHAT I FINALLY UNDERSTAND:
The Great Masters Review was never really about fancy tools.

It was about different people seeing different possibilities.

And sometimes the most important invention is not something new.

Sometimes it is the thing that helps everyone remember what was already there.

FINAL DAY 5 THEORY:
The stars never forgot Selena.

Selena just forgot how to answer.

Not anymore.

🌙 EPILOGUE — “SELENA REOPENS THE STARS”

By the time the Great Masters Review officially ended, nobody was talking about the Review anymore.

They were talking about the ships.

There were seven of them now, resting beyond Selena’s ancient docking station like they had simply been delayed by a few thousand years.

John stood near the observation platform with his field notebook open.

For once, he had no idea what to write.

I considered this historic.

“So,” I said.

“No.”

“I haven’t said anything.”

“You were about to.”

“I was only going to ask whether your article still starts with plumbing.”

John slowly closed his eyes.

Behind us, DeNae was reorganizing the remaining pastries into what she had started calling diplomatic portions.

The Cleaning Assistant waited beside her boot.

She pretended not to notice it.

It chirped.

She gave it a crumb.

Nobody commented.

Mostly because we enjoyed living.

Oksana and Ziv stood at the central console surrounded by layers of glowing star maps.

For the first time all week, Oksana had found enough impossible technology to keep even her occupied.

Ziv, meanwhile, had become considerably more difficult to impress now that everyone knew she was the Locksmith from Jupiter.

She was still sparkly.

Still sarcastic.

Still carrying seventeen tools.

And still insisting she had not technically joined the Guild.

DeNae handed her a pastry.

Ziv took it.

We all knew what that meant.

Rowan had somehow become unofficial ambassador to three visiting civilizations.

I had no idea how.

One minute he had been staring at the ships in silence.

The next he was showing an elegant extraterrestrial delegation the Cleaning Assistant’s snack pouch and explaining why every respectable interstellar expedition required a little decorative sparkle.

They seemed fascinated.

John looked over.

“Why is Rowan representing us?”

“Because nobody stopped him quickly enough,” DeNae said.

“That feels accurate,” Oksana added.

John wrote it down.

Then looked annoyed with himself for doing so.

I walked to the edge of the platform.

Below us, Selena glowed.

The same silver domes we had seen when we arrived now seemed tiny compared with everything beneath them.

Five days ago, we thought we were coming to a technology exhibition.

John was supposed to interview masters.

I was supposed to behave.

DeNae was supposed to keep us organized.

Oksana was supposed to study the Review.

Rowan was supposed to—

Actually, nobody had ever established what Rowan was supposed to do.

That was probably our first mistake.

Instead, we found a Laser Cutter that revealed a buried doorway.

A Cleaning Assistant that uncovered a map.

A Mixer Tap that built an atmosphere from another world.

A sarcastic stranger who turned out to be the Locksmith from Jupiter.

And a strange little object called Simplexus that remembered the way to the stars.

I looked at the glowing network stretching across the ancient station.

One connection.

Then ten.

Then hundreds.

Then thousands.

The Masters Review had asked us all week what made a great invention important.

I finally understood.

It was never the object.

It was the idea behind it.

The willingness to look at something ordinary and ask what else it could become.

A cutter could open history.

A vacuum could find a lost road.

Plumbing could grow a world.

A lock could be opened by someone who understood gravity differently.

And a broken collection of ancient fragments could reconnect civilizations that had spent 4,813 years trying to find their way home.

John came to stand beside me.

His notebook was still open.

At the top of the page was the headline he had originally planned to use:

INNOVATIONS HIGHLIGHT SELENA’S GREAT MASTERS REVIEW

He stared at it.

Then crossed it out.

Slowly, underneath, he wrote:

SELENA REOPENS THE STARS

I stopped smiling for a second.

“John.”

“No.”

“That’s beautiful.”

“Do not make this emotional.”

“Too late,” DeNae called from behind us.

Rowan made a suspicious sniffing noise.

John pointed at him.

“You are not crying.”

“I am experiencing atmospheric moisture.”

Ziv looked around the perfectly controlled chamber.

“There is no atmospheric moisture.”

Rowan sighed.

“You ruin everything.”

“I improve accuracy.”

Oksana laughed.

Actually laughed.

John looked personally betrayed by the entire group.

Then one of the newly arrived ships sent another docking signal.

The station answered automatically.

Ancient lights traveled down the platform.

Somewhere beyond Selena, another forgotten route came alive.

I looked at all of them.

John with his notebook.

DeNae with her pastries and her completely-not-adopted Cleaning Assistant.

Oksana standing beneath impossible star maps.

Rowan sparkling emotionally despite scientific objections.

And Ziv, our definitely-not-Guild-member Guild member, already reaching for another tool.

I had wanted aliens.

Technically, I got them.

A lot of them.

But somewhere between the Laser Cutter and the first arriving ship, Selena had become something more than another adventure.

It had become a reminder.

Sometimes you do not discover a new world.

Sometimes you discover that the worlds were connected all along.

Someone just needed to remember how to open the door.

And, occasionally, apparently—

the right plumber.

John heard that thought somehow.

“Do not put that in the journal.”

I smiled.

He really should have known better by now.

📓 TARA’S HANDY DANDY JOURNAL — FINAL ENTRY

QUEST: 🌙 Selena — Notes From an Untimely Business Trip

ORIGINAL PLAN:
John attends Great Masters Review.
John writes sensible article.
Everyone behaves.

FINAL RESULT:
None of the above.

🔧 DAY 1 — LASER CUTTER

Revealed an ancient doorway beneath Selena.

Lesson: Sometimes a tool meant to cut something open also cuts through several thousand years of assumptions.

🧹 DAY 2 — CLEANING ASSISTANT

Uncovered a buried map beneath the colony.

Lesson: Follow the dust.

Also: DeNae has a vacuum now.

She disputes this.

Evidence strongly disagrees.

🚿 DAY 3 — MIXER TAP

Created an atmosphere from another world and woke an ancient environmental chamber.

Lesson: Selena plumbing is ridiculous.

Also beautiful.

Also do not tell DeNae I touched the glowing plant.

She knows.

👽 DAY 4 — LOCKSMITH FROM JUPITER

Was Ziv.

Apparently this was obvious.

It was not.

Lesson: Sometimes a lock is not waiting for a key.

Sometimes it is waiting for someone who grew up understanding gravity differently.

🌌 DAY 5 — SIMPLEXUS

Reactivated the ancient interstellar transit network.

Lesson: The most important invention was not new at all.

It was a memory.

💫✨🌙

✨ FINAL GUILD STATUS

JOHN:
Arrived as reluctant journalist.
Leaving as the man who wrote SELENA REOPENS THE STARS.
Still pretending he did not enjoy any of this.

DeNAE:
Kept everyone fed.
Maintained practical sanity.
Accidentally acquired Cleaning Assistant.
Has converted pastries into interplanetary diplomacy.

OKSANA:
Found technology she did not already understand.
Possibly happiest person on Selena.
Will deny this.

ROWAN SPARKLE GOBLIN:
Brought tools for reasons nobody questioned.
Attempted to name multiple objects and plants.
Became unofficial alien ambassador.
Experienced “atmospheric moisture.”

ZIV:
Pretty.
Sparkly.
Sarcastic.
Locksmith from Jupiter.
Claims she has not joined the Guild.

She accepted the pastries.

Case closed.

ME:
Was told not to touch anything.

Results were mixed.

🌙 WHAT SELENA TAUGHT ME

The best masters are not the people who already have every answer.

They are the people willing to keep asking different questions.

And sometimes the thing everyone thinks is broken—

is simply waiting for the right person to understand it.

FINAL THEORY:
The stars never forgot Selena.

Selena only forgot how to answer.

It remembers now.
