🌙 SELENA: NOTES FROM AN UNTIMELY BUSINESS TRIP
🔧 DAY 1 — “WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?”
Laura’s Story — Tachyon Pliers
I had been sent to Selena as a last-minute replacement reporter for the Grand Masters’ Show, and by midmorning I was already questioning my career choices.
Especially when a mechanic handed me something called Tachyon Pliers.
“What do you think they do?” he asked.
Seven visitors nearby immediately became interested.
“Don't answer,” Laura advised me. “That's a trap.”
She introduced herself and her companions—Tara, John, Lala, Julie, Oksana and DeNae.
I examined the strange pliers.
“Some kind of precision repair tool?”
The mechanic smiled.
Laura whispered, “Definitely a trap.”
Before he could explain, there was a sharp CRACK from the neighboring workbench.
A small demonstration drone dropped from the air and smashed onto the floor.
The mechanic sighed.
“Perfect.”
“Perfect?” I asked. “It's broken.”
“Exactly.”
He picked up the Tachyon Pliers and touched the twisted remains.
Blue light shimmered around them.
Then something impossible happened.
A broken propeller straightened. A crack disappeared. Scattered pieces slid backward across the floor and snapped into place.
The drone looked exactly as it had moments before the crash.
Laura stared at it.
“You didn't repair it.”
“No.”
“You brought back the moment when it wasn't broken.”
The mechanic grinned. “Exactly.”
The pliers could temporarily grip an object's previous position in time, allowing a craftsman to work on it as it existed seconds before the damage occurred.
John leaned closer. “How long does it last?”
“Not long.”
DeNae nodded. “So you'd better know what you're doing.”
“Very much so.”
I was scribbling furiously when Laura pointed toward the drone.
“Wait.”
Everyone looked.
There was a tiny scorch mark on one wing.
“That was there before it crashed,” she said. “The pliers didn't remove it.”
The mechanic's smile widened.
Laura had spotted the detail I'd missed.
“They don't take something back to when it was perfect,” she said. “Only to the moment before it broke.”
And suddenly I understood why Selena's craftsmen valued the tool so highly.
It couldn't erase every mistake.
It simply gave you one small chance to stop the latest one from becoming permanent.
I wrote that down.
Laura glanced at my notebook.
“Now that sounds like a story.”
She was right.
I'd arrived on Selena expecting to write about impossible machines.
By lunchtime, this reporter had discovered something considerably more interesting:
Even on Selena, you can't undo the past. Sometimes you're just lucky enough to get a few seconds of it back.

✨ PROLOGUE — “I Packed Pastries. Apparently We’re Going to the Moon.”

I knew something was wrong when John said “no” before opening the envelope.

To be fair, this was not unusual.

John says “no” to many things.

Especially things involving Tara.

I was sitting at the Guild Hall kitchen table with my planner open and a basket of pastries beside me when the envelope arrived.

John looked at it.

Then at Tara.

Then back at the envelope.

“No.”

Tara looked offended.

“You haven’t opened it.”

“I know.”

This was where I made my first mistake.

I said, “That seems premature.”

Ten minutes later we were apparently discussing a five-day trip to Selena.

John had been selected to attend the Great Masters Review as a Guild representative and write an official report.

He was not pleased.

Tara was delighted.

Oksana became interested the moment she saw the words Lunar Variations.

I made the mistake of asking whether lodging and meals were included.

They were not.

So naturally, I started a packing list.

By the time Rowan heard the words moon colony and experimental machinery, John’s business trip had become a full Guild expedition.

I added another page to the planner.

Then another.

John looked at me.

“You think we need that much?”

I looked at Tara.

“Yes.”

https://upforme.ru/uploads/0019/3c/8c/7246/840661.png

🌙 DAY 1 — “OLDER ALIENS”

Selena was beautiful.

It was also full of machinery that looked expensive, delicate, and exactly like the sort of thing Tara would want to touch.

John noticed this too.

“Observe with your eyes,” he told her.

“I do that.”

“With only your eyes.”

I decided to stay out of it.

Mostly because I was busy carrying enough food to prevent everyone from making poor decisions due to hunger.

Unfortunately, food cannot prevent every poor decision.

We reached one of the Masters Review demonstrations just as a strange blue-glowing device was being introduced.

The Laser Cutter from the Xenotool of Locksmith collection.

According to the master presenting it, the cutter could slice through bonded alloys and materials too dangerous for ordinary tools.

Tara stared at it like she had just been handed a birthday present.

“Oh, I want one.”

“No,” John said.

“You don’t even know what I’d use it for.”

“That is exactly why the answer is no.”

I ate a pastry.

Then the demonstration ended.

And the Laser Cutter turned itself back on.

Nobody was holding it.

The beam swept across the platform and struck an ordinary section of wall.

Except apparently it was not ordinary.

Blue lines began appearing beneath the surface.

One.

Then several.

Then an enormous geometric outline.

The room went quiet.

Oksana moved closer.

“This is older than the colony.”

Tara immediately smiled.

John saw the smile.

“No.”

“Older aliens,” Tara said.

“We are surrounded by aliens.”

“Older aliens.”

I had to look away because I was laughing.

Then a voice behind us said:

“It is a doorway.”

We turned.

That was our first look at Ziv.

She was beautiful in a very Selena sort of way — almost human, but not quite. Light purple shimmer moved across her skin, tiny sparkles caught in her hair, and her violet eyes looked like she had already assessed all of us and found at least three problems.

She was carrying an impressive amount of equipment.

John asked if she knew what we were looking at.

Ziv glanced at the glowing wall.

“No. I routinely identify six-thousand-year-old access mechanisms recreationally.”

I looked at Tara.

Tara looked at me.

There was absolutely no saving this.

“I like her,” Tara whispered.

“I know.”

Ziv walked toward the doorway and crouched beside the markings.

Oksana joined her immediately.

The two of them began discussing frequencies and structural seals.

I understood approximately four words.

That was enough.

Then the floor trembled.

Just slightly.

The glow in the wall deepened.

And something beneath Selena answered.

I slowly lowered the pastry I was holding.

John stopped writing.

Tara looked thrilled.

Of course she did.

I opened my planner.

Under DAY 1, I wrote:

Laser Cutter — not just a tool.

Then underneath:

Ancient doorway.

Then:

New friend: Ziv. Sarcastic. Very capable. Tara likes her. This may become a problem.

I stared at that sentence for a moment.

Then added:

Pack more pastries tomorrow.

Because clearly that was going to be the sensible part of this expedition.

🌙 SELENA: NOTES FROM AN UNTIMELY BUSINESS TRIP
👷 DAY 2 — “THE STORY OF ONE PROBLEM”
Julie’s Story — Pipe Cutter
On my second day reporting from Selena’s Grand Masters’ Show, I decided to stop asking what things did and start asking why they had been invented.
Julie approved.
“Much better question.”
We found a master craftsman demonstrating an ordinary-looking Pipe Cutter.
His greatest challenge, he told us, had begun beneath Selena’s oldest colony, where a living mineral had grown inside the main water line.
“Living?” Tara asked.
“Unfortunately.”
Every attempt to cut through it made the mineral harden.
“So you invented a stronger cutter?” I asked.
“No.”
John examined the tool while DeNae asked about pressure levels. Laura studied a sample of the strange mineral.
Then Julie asked, “What happened when you stopped trying to cut it?”
The craftsman smiled.
That had been the solution.
The Pipe Cutter didn't actually cut through the blockage. It created a microscopic break in the pipe’s pressure field. Without pressure to cling against, the mineral relaxed and could simply be removed.
Oksana nodded. “You stopped fighting it.”
“Exactly.”
I wrote that down.
Julie peered over my shoulder.
A good craftsman doesn't always need a better tool. Sometimes he needs a better question.
“You're improving,” she said.
“I'm a professional journalist.”
“Of course.”
Behind us, Lala whispered to Tara, “He hates when she does that.”
“I heard you.”
Julie laughed.
Two days into my assignment, this reporter was beginning to understand Selena.
Yesterday I'd learned not to pretend I knew the answer.
Today Julie taught me something harder:
Sometimes finding the answer begins with admitting you've been asking the wrong question.

The aliens made me late.

https://upforme.ru/uploads/0019/3c/8c/7199/t599241.png
By the time the Grand Masters' Show opened, we'd been on Selena long enough for Tara to become dangerously comfortable with space.
She arrived wearing a helmet.
Nobody else did .

Julie looked at her. “Why?”

“Precaution.

“Against what?

“I'll know when it happens.”

Unfortunately, twenty minutes later something did happen.

Tara couldn't get the helmet off.

One of the two release tabs opened normally. The other refused to move.

John tried it .

“It's jammed.

“Don't force it,” Tara said. “We don't know what it's connected to.”

“Your helmet.

“Beyond that.

Laura examined the seal. “I think the magnetic lock is stuck.”

“DeNae,” Tara said immediately. “Get the harmonica.”

DeNae lowered the bag from her shoulder.

“What harmonica?

“The harmonica I specifically told you to pack.”

“You specifically told me to pack everything in this bag.”

She started digging .

“One roller skate.

“No.

“A notarized map of Ohio.”

“No.

“A tiny umbrella.

“No.

“Fake mustache.

“DeNae.”

“Three feet of aquarium tubing.”

“Harmonica.

“Tennis ball signed by nobody.”

John looked at Tara. “Have you made this list?”

“There was a reason for every item.”

“What was the roller skate for?”

Tara paused .

“There was a reason for almost every item.”

DeNae kept going.

"Antique key. Glow stick. Keith."

She pulled out a sock puppet.

Julie pointed at the bag. “Keith goes back.”

“One AA battery… laminated coupon for carpet cleaning…”

DeNae reached the bottom.

“No harmonica.

Tara stared at her .

“You forgot the only important thing.”

“You wrote the list!

“What did you think 'H' meant?”

“Hot dog.

John closed his eyes.

Julie took charge.

"Fine. Nobody touches anything until we figure out the helmet."

Lala was already across the pavilion.

“Define anything.

“Lala, don't—”

Click .

Music started .

A spotlight hit Tara .

The platform beneath her feet began rotating.

A glowing sign appeared overhead:

INTERACTIVE EARTH SPECIMEN

Tara slowly revolved past us.

Nobody spoke.

Then Tara raised one hand in a dignified wave.

“I knew they were watching me.”

John sighed. “You're an exhibit.”

A Selenean child approached Lala and handed her a coin.

Lala found a slot on the platform.

“No,” John said .

Clink .

The platform sped up .

Tara whipped past.

“STOP FUNDING THIS!

More visitors gathered .

One asked Oksana, who was holding her cat, “Is the Earth dangerous specimen?”

Oksana watched Tara go around.

“Only with information.”

Another coin has appeared.

Oksana accepted it .

DeNae handed her the tiny umbrella.

Within minutes, Oksana was collecting donations.

Julie made a sign:

DO NOT TOUCH, FEED, ROTATE OR PROVOKE TARA

Lala added :

PHOTOGRAPHS: TWO COINS

Julie snatched the marker away.

Laura was still watching Tara's helmet.

“If we interrupt the magnetic field, it should release.”

Nobody heard her .

Because Oksana's cat had just noticed his reflection in Tara's visor.

Oksana looked down at him.

“Oh.

John knew that “oh.

“Don't let him go.

“He has already made his decision.”

The cat launched .

Straight through the open visor.

Tara screamed .

The cat attacked his reflection.

Tara ran.

Unfortunately, the exhibit platform rolled with her.

“TARA!

“THERE IS A HOSTILE ANIMAL IN MY HELMET!”

“THAT'S OKSANA'S CAT!”

“THEN WHY IS THERE ANOTHER ONE?!”

She tore through the Grand Masters' Show with the platform spinning beneath her.

Oksana followed her cat .

Julie followed Oksana, shouting instructions.

DeNae followed Julie while things fell out of the bag.

The fake mustache .

The antique key .

Keith .

Lala followed because apparently the tour was still in progress.

John followed because somebody had to explain this later.

Laura didn't move .

“They'll come back.

They did .

Tara came around the pavilion at full speed and headed straight toward one of the featured inventions:

TACHYON PLIERS

Laura's eyes widened .

“That'll do it.

The pliers activated .

CLUNK .

The magnetic lock released.

The helmet flew off Tara's head.

Oksana caught it .

Her cat climbed out, looked around for his opponent, and appeared satisfied that he had killed him.

The Selenean crowd erupted in applause.

Tara sat on the floor.

Her hair stood straight up.

“I had it under control.”

Julie looked at the runaway exhibit, the scattered contents of DeNae's bag, Oksana holding a helmet full of donation money, and Keith hanging from something nobody could identify.

“No, you didn't.

Laura walked over .

“The Tachyon Pliers interrupted the magnetic field.”

Silence .

“I said that fifteen minutes ago.”

John nodded. “She did.”

Julie turned to him. “Did you hear her?”

“Yes.

“Why didn't you say something?”

John looked at Tara .

Then at the cat.

Then at Lala, who was still accepting coins.

“I wanted to see where this went.”

Tara stood and waved to the applauding crowd.

“They loved me.

“They thought you were part of the exhibit,” Julie said.

Tara shrugged .

“Still the best exhibit.”

🌙 DAY 2 — “FOLLOW THE DUST”

By the second morning on Selena, John had developed a system.

He had a schedule.

He had interview questions.

He had three sharpened styluses.

He had also informed me, very specifically, that today we were going to learn about the masters, not accidentally uncover another ancient alien structure.

I thought this showed an unrealistic level of optimism.

We met near the Great Masters Review pavilion shortly after breakfast.

DeNae had brought pastries.

Oksana had brought the technical program.

John had brought his notebook.

Rowan had brought tools.

Nobody knew why.

And Ziv had brought approximately twice as many tools as Rowan, which resulted in the two of them immediately comparing equipment like children trading rare treasures.

“That one is illegal in three systems,” Ziv told him.

Rowan’s eyes widened.

“I love it.”

John closed his eyes briefly.

“This is going well.”

The day’s assignment sounded harmless enough.

The Review wanted us to talk with participants from the Masters of All Trades collection and ask them about the hardest problem they had ever solved.

John approved of this.

“It’s useful,” he said. “It tells us how they think.”

“I know how they think,” I said.

He looked at me.

“They see a problem and build something weird.”

Ziv nodded.

“That is remarkably accurate.”

John gave her a betrayed look.

Our interview was with a Selenean master named Orin, who had spent most of his career maintaining sections of the colony nobody else wanted to deal with.

He did not particularly enjoy talking about himself.

John asked about awards.

Orin shrugged.

John asked about his best invention.

Orin shrugged again.

Then John asked about the most difficult job he had ever faced.

That changed everything.

Years earlier, one of Selena’s oldest maintenance districts had begun failing.

Not dramatically.

That would have been easier.

Instead, fine lunar dust had started infiltrating sealed systems.

Ventilation channels clogged.

Sensors failed.

Access panels jammed.

Machines that had worked for decades began shutting down one after another.

The obvious solution was to send workers in to clean everything manually.

They tried.

It didn’t work.

The dust returned.

They modified filtration systems.

Still returned.

They sealed the vents.

The dust found another way in.

Orin smiled slightly as he told us about it.

“I failed eleven times.”

John looked up from his notebook.

“Eleven?”

“Twelve if you count the idea involving electrostatic mesh.”

“What happened?”

“It caught fire.”

Rowan leaned forward.

“Spectacularly?”

“A little.”

“I respect that.”

Eventually Orin stopped trying to clean the colony the way everyone thought it should be cleaned.

Instead, he built something that would follow the dust.

A small autonomous machine designed to crawl into places people could not reach, identify contaminants, adapt its own cleaning methods, and keep going until the system was clear.

He reached beneath the table.

Something chirped.

Then rolled out.

I stared.

“Oh.”

It was adorable.

Small.

Round.

Covered in little brushes, tubes, articulated arms, and blinking lights.

Its main optical sensor turned toward us.

Then toward DeNae’s pastry bag.

DeNae immediately pulled the bag closer.

“No.”

The machine chirped again.

Orin smiled.

“This is a Cleaning Assistant from the Masters of All Trades collection.”

I crouched.

“So this saved the district?”

“It saved three.”

John wrote that down.

DeNae stared at the Cleaning Assistant.

“It looks like a kitchen appliance.”

The machine rotated toward her.

She looked at it.

It looked at her.

“I didn’t mean that negatively.”

It chirped.

“Good.”

Then it rolled after us.

At first, nobody noticed.

We were heading back toward the ancient doorway revealed yesterday by the Laser Cutter.

John had reluctantly agreed we should document it properly.

Ziv insisted she wanted another look.

Oksana had barely stopped thinking about it.

I, naturally, had been thinking about it continuously.

Rowan was humming.

DeNae was carrying food.

So everything was normal.

Until we reached the newly opened passage beneath the pavilion.

The Cleaning Assistant was still behind us.

John turned around.

“Why is that here?”

We all looked at Ziv.

Ziv looked at Rowan.

Rowan looked at me.

I pointed at DeNae.

DeNae looked offended.

“Why me?”

The machine rolled directly to her feet.

That answered the question.

“No.”

It chirped.

“No.”

It bumped gently against her boot.

Rowan whispered, “It chose you.”

“I do not want to be chosen.”

She reached into her bag, broke off the tiniest corner of a pastry, and dropped it.

The Cleaning Assistant vacuumed it up instantly.

Ziv raised an eyebrow.

DeNae pointed at her.

“You saw nothing.”

“I saw everything.”

Then the machine left us.

It rolled deeper into the passage.

“Should we stop it?” John asked.

“No,” I said immediately.

“Yes,” John said at exactly the same time.

We followed it.

The underground corridor was unlike anything above Selena.

The walls were smooth black stone veined with faint silver light.

The markings we had seen yesterday continued downward.

Stars.

Circles.

Geometric paths.

Symbols Oksana and Ziv still could not fully identify.

The Cleaning Assistant reached the first landing and began sweeping.

Rowan frowned.

“It’s cleaning.”

“That is generally what a Cleaning Assistant does,” John said.

“No. Look.”

The little machine wasn’t cleaning the whole floor.

Only certain places.

It swept a narrow line.

Stopped.

Moved several feet.

Swept another.

Turned.

Cleaned a circle.

Then another line.

DeNae stared at it.

“That is not random.”

Oksana crouched.

“No.”

Ziv knelt beside her.

The machine continued.

Gray lunar dust disappeared beneath its brushes.

Something metallic gleamed beneath.

A silver line.

Then another.

Then dozens.

My stomach did that happy little flip it does whenever reality becomes substantially more interesting.

“John.”

“No.”

“I haven’t said anything.”

“You sound excited.”

“I am excited.”

The Cleaning Assistant rolled farther into the chamber, revealing more lines beneath the dust.

They connected.

Branches spread away from us.

Circles appeared at regular intervals.

Symbols lit faintly as they were uncovered.

Oksana slowly stood.

“This is a map.”

John stopped writing.

“A map of what?”

Ziv walked to another section.

She traced one of the revealed lines with her finger.

“This corridor.”

Then another.

“And this one continues beneath the colony.”

Oksana pointed toward several branching routes.

“These are not rooms.”

I moved closer.

“No.”

They were much bigger than rooms.

Much bigger than one building.

The Cleaning Assistant chirped cheerfully and uncovered another section.

A network spread across the entire floor.

Lines ran beneath domes.

Under pavilions.

Beyond the current limits of the colony.

And farther.

Much farther.

John stared.

“How large is this?”

Ziv was quiet for once.

Oksana answered.

“Potentially all of Selena.”

I smiled.

John noticed.

“Don’t.”

“I didn’t say anything.”

“You’re thinking ‘ancient alien subway.’”

“I was actually thinking ‘ancient alien transportation network.’”

“That is worse.”

Rowan had already crouched beside the Cleaning Assistant.

“You beautiful little dust goblin.”

The machine chirped.

“No,” DeNae said.

Rowan looked up.

“What?”

“You are not naming it.”

“I wasn’t.”

“You absolutely were.”

The machine rolled back toward her.

DeNae sighed.

She looked around.

Everyone was watching.

She very carefully reached into her pastry bag.

Broke off another crumb.

Dropped it.

The Cleaning Assistant vacuumed it up.

Then bumped happily against her boot.

I put a hand over my heart.

“Oh, DeNae.”

“Don’t.”

“It loves you.”

“It cleans ventilation ducts.”

“It can do two things.”

Ziv looked at the little machine.

“Actually, this model can do approximately forty-seven things.”

DeNae stared at her.

“That was not helpful.”

John returned to Orin’s story.

A master who had failed repeatedly.

Who had stopped trying to force the problem into familiar solutions.

Who had built a machine designed to look where nobody else thought to look.

And thousands of years later, that same little machine had done it again.

It had followed the dust.

And found something everyone else had walked over.

Oksana looked across the glowing map.

“The Review prompt asked what made Orin a good master.”

John nodded.

“He didn’t give up.”

I looked at the Cleaning Assistant.

“I think there’s more to it than that.”

John waited.

“He stopped assuming he already knew what the problem was.”

Ziv looked at me.

“That was surprisingly sensible.”

“Thank you.”

“I am concerned.”

Rowan nodded gravely.

“So am I.”

I ignored both of them.

Because beneath our feet, the newly revealed lines had begun glowing brighter.

One by one.

Like something was following the map toward us.

And suddenly Day Two no longer felt like a story about a cleaning machine.

It felt like the Cleaning Assistant had just shown us where the real story was hiding.

📓 TARA’S HANDY DANDY JOURNAL — DAY 2

FOUND ITEM: 🧹 Cleaning Assistant — Masters of All Trades collection

OFFICIAL PURPOSE:
Adaptive cleaning machine built to solve a lunar-dust problem nobody could fix the normal way.

ACTUAL PURPOSE TODAY:
Apparently uncovering enormous ancient maps beneath Selena.

IMPORTANT DISCOVERY:
The doorway from yesterday is not isolated.

It connects to a buried network extending beneath the colony and possibly across the moon.

MASTER LESSON:
A good master is not someone who always knows the answer.

A good master keeps looking after the obvious answers fail.

And sometimes builds a tiny vacuum robot.

NEW DEVELOPMENT:
Cleaning Assistant has chosen DeNae.

DeNae denies this.

DeNae also feeds it pastry crumbs.

I have documented both facts.

ZIV STATUS:
Still sarcastic.

Still carrying too many tools.

Still excellent.

ROWAN STATUS:
Has attempted to name Cleaning Assistant.

Request denied.

Temporarily.

JOHN STATUS:
Increasingly concerned about the direction of his article.

OKSANA STATUS:
Quietly fascinated.

Which means this is probably much bigger than we think.

CURRENT THEORY:
Selena is sitting on top of an ancient transportation system.

SECONDARY THEORY:
The Cleaning Assistant knows more than John.

CONFIDENCE LEVEL:
Extremely high.

🌙 DAY 2 — “APPARENTLY I HAVE A VACUUM”

The Cleaning Assistant followed me.

I did not invite it.

It simply decided that because I had pastries, we were now friends.

While everyone else studied the underground chamber, the little machine began cleaning very specific lines through the lunar dust.

Not random lines.

A map.

A very large map.

Oksana and Ziv realized first that it showed a buried network beneath Selena.

Tara immediately looked delighted.

John immediately looked tired.

Rowan immediately wanted to name the machine.

I immediately said no.

Then the Cleaning Assistant bumped against my boot.

I gave it a crumb.

Nobody needed to comment on that.

By the end of the day, we knew two things:

Selena was hiding something enormous beneath the colony.

And apparently I now had a vacuum.

https://i.imgur.com/wqWrwINm.jpeg

🔧 DAY 2 — JACKS OF ALL TRADES
Item: Pipe Cutter

The trouble started when Tara found a pipe coming out of the wall.

Not an exhibit.

Just a pipe .

She put her ear against it.

John kept walking.

“No.

“You don't even know what I'm doing.”

“I've known you long enough.”

Tara waved us over .

“There's something alive in here.”

Julie listened .

“There is absolutely nothing alive in there.”

KNOCK. KNOCK .

Julie jumped backward .

Tara's entire face lit up.

“HELLO?

KNOCK .

“Oh my God.

“Tara—”

“WE HAVE CONTACT.”

She knocked twice .

It knocked twice .

Three times .

Three times .

DeNae whispered, “It's copying her.”

Tara whispered back, “They're learning.”

John inspected the pipe.

“It's probably vibration from another exhibit.”

Tara ignored him .

“My name is Tara.

KNOCK .

She gasped .

“It knows.

“It knocked once!

“Exactly.

Oksana's cat joined the investigation and shoved one paw underneath the pipe.

Oksana picked her up .

“No. We don't put hands in alien.”

Finally, a Grand Master hurried over.

“What are you doing?

“Establishing peaceful relations.”

“With the heating system?”

Tara froze.

“The what?

He explained that somewhere inside the pipe, a loose valve was rattling.

The challenge for the day was actually to locate it.

Tara looked devastated .

“So nobody is in there?”

“No.

A knock came from within .

She pointed wildly .

“THEN EXPLAIN THAT.

The master handed her a Pipe Cutter .

“Find the defective section.”

Tara looked at the cutter.

Then the pipe.

Then the master.

“You're asking me to cut open the alien.”

“There is no alien.

“That's exactly what you'd tell the press.”

Julie took the Pipe Cutter away.

For the next ten minutes, John and the master worked logically.

Julie read the diagram.

Oksana’s cat kept staring at one section.

DeNae ate something she’d found in her purse.

And Tara conducted negotiations.

Finally:

KNOCK-KNOCK-KNOCK-KNOCK.

Tara shouted, “WAIT!”

Everybody stopped.

She crawled along the pipe.

Knocked.

Nothing.

Moved farther.

Knocked.

Nothing.

Moved again.

KNOCK-KNOCK.

She pointed.

“Here.”

The master cut the section open.

A loose valve dropped out.

Tara stared at it.

Then looked inside the pipe.

“Hello?”

Nothing.

She looked genuinely disappointed.

John patted her shoulder.

“You did solve the challenge.”

“I lost a friend.”

DeNae offered her something.

“Want a birthday candle?”

Tara looked at her.

“Why do you have a birthday candle?”

“You told me to pack them.”

“I told you to pack TWO.”

“I have two.”

Tara took one.

“What are you doing?” Julie asked.

Tara lit it and placed it beside the pipe.

“A memorial.”

For the rest of the afternoon, everyone had to walk around a tiny birthday candle honoring an alien who had never existed.

Tara named him Kevin.

🌙 SELENA: NOTES FROM AN UNTIMELY BUSINESS TRIP
👷 DAY 2 — “THE STORY OF ONE PROBLEM”
Laura’s Story — Pipe Cutter
On my second day covering Selena’s Grand Masters’ Show, I found Laura staring at a Pipe Cutter.
“Please don't tell me you've discovered something strange about this one too.”
She smiled. “Maybe.”
The craftsman displaying it told us about the hardest job of his career: a living mineral had invaded an underground water line. Every attempt to cut it caused it to harden.
John suggested reducing the pressure.
DeNae asked whether heat affected it.
Tara suggested explosives.
“No,” everyone said.
Laura wasn't looking at the pipe.
She was looking at a diagram behind it.
“Those marks,” she said. “I've seen that pattern before.”
I followed her finger.
Three interlocking circles.
The same symbol had been engraved near yesterday's Tachyon Pliers.
The craftsman explained that his solution had been to stop cutting altogether. His Pipe Cutter briefly interrupted the pipe's pressure field, causing the mineral to release itself.
Problem solved.
Everyone moved on.
Laura didn't.
“You saw the symbol too, didn't you?” she asked.
I had.
“What does it mean?”
“I don't know.”
Two days ago, I would have invented a convincing answer.
Instead, I opened my notebook and wrote:
Three circles. Tachyon Pliers. Pipe Cutter. Why?
Laura smiled.
“Look at that. You're learning.”
I had come to Selena as a reporter looking for five interesting inventions.
After only two days, I was beginning to wonder whether I'd actually found five pieces of the same story.
