🌪 DAY TWO — WEATHER WITH EVIL INTENTIONS
Today’s Forecast: 100% Chance of Questionable Decisions
📍 Witch’s Book — Mystery Manor Village

I woke up Wednesday morning to the sound of someone screaming about wet underwear.

Naturally, I investigated.

Mrs. Brunhilda stood outside her cottage, shaking her fist at a tiny thundercloud hovering directly above her laundry.

Every time she moved her washing line, the cloud followed.

RAIN!

She moved left.

RAIN!

She moved right.

MORE RAIN!

I couldn’t help it.

I laughed.

DeNae elbowed me.

“Tara! That poor woman!”

“I’m sorry! It’s just such a DEDICATED little cloud!”

Unfortunately, the rest of the village wasn’t doing much better.

The fountain was spraying thick purple fog.

Snow was falling INSIDE the bakery.

A goat was floating six feet above the ground.

And the baker had discovered that his bread was predicting people’s futures.

One loaf informed him he would marry his mother-in-law.

He immediately requested a very strong drink.

Honestly, I couldn’t blame him.

John took charge of rescuing the floating goat and securing the loose shutters.

MAD was photographing everything.

“I’ve traveled the world, but I’ve NEVER seen weather like this! The lighting is incredible!”

Lala was standing in the square arguing with a miniature tornado.

“PUT THAT LAWN CHAIR DOWN!”

The tornado threw the chair at her.

“OH, YOU LITTLE—”

I decided it was probably safer to return to Alevtina’s cottage.

Inside, Julie and Oksana had discovered something disturbing.

The missing page wasn’t merely protecting the border from evil spirits.

It was also keeping the four magical elements in balance.

Without it, Fire, Water, Earth, and Air were apparently having a full-blown temper tantrum.

“Like toddlers,” DeNae observed.

“Very powerful toddlers,” Oksana corrected.

Rowan appeared carrying a fresh pot of tea.

“Good morning, ladies! May I interest anyone in magical disaster insurance?”

Alevtina threw a shoe at him.

I caught it.

“Wait! We might need that for the tornado!”

DeNae slowly turned toward me.

“Do NOT encourage him.”

Julie opened an enormous ancient book, its pages glowing with orange flames.

📌 FOUND ITEM: BOOK OF FIRE — BOOK OF THE ELEMENTS COLLECTION

Oksana explained that we could summon one elemental to persuade the others to restore order.

I voted for Fire.

“Because FIRE is fabulous!”

John looked at me.

“Fire is also how buildings burn down.”

“Details!”

We gathered around the Book of Fire.

Oksana spoke the ancient words.

Julie traced the magical symbol.

And from the book emerged a spectacular phoenix made entirely of golden flames.

It spread its enormous wings.

I gasped.

“OH, HE’S BEAUTIFUL!”

The phoenix looked directly at Rowan.

Then promptly set his entire stack of contracts on fire.

Lala applauded.

“I LOVE THIS BIRD!”

Unfortunately, the phoenix had absolutely no intention of behaving.

It flew out the window.

The village fountain began boiling.

The town clock started melting.

And Mrs. Brunhilda’s thundercloud turned into a steaming kettle.

“Well,” I admitted, “that could have gone better.”

“YOU THINK?!” DeNae shrieked.

While John organized the villagers and Lala continued threatening the local weather, MAD came up with a wonderful idea.

“Why are we fighting the elements? Why not invite them to the Halloween celebration?”

Oksana’s eyes brightened.

“Of course! The elements want to be recognized, not controlled!”

We quickly divided the responsibilities.

I promised Fire the honor of lighting every jack-o’-lantern in the village.

DeNae offered Water a magnificent moonlit fountain.

Julie promised Earth a beautiful enchanted autumn garden.

John agreed to help Air create spectacular flying Halloween banners, provided they were safely secured.

MAD volunteered to document the celebration so the magical world would remember it.

And Lala promised to stop insulting the tornado.

For at least five minutes.

The phoenix considered our offers.

Then it spread its wings and released a magnificent golden wave of magic.

WHOOSH!

The snow melted.

The fountain returned to normal.

The goat floated gently back to Earth.

And Mrs. Brunhilda’s laundry finally dried.

I clapped excitedly.

“ANOTHER GUILD SUCCESS!”

DeNae gave me a look.

“We caused half the trouble.”

“Yes, but we FIXED all of it!”

“That’s not as reassuring as you think.”

Back inside the cottage, Julie noticed something peculiar in the Book of Fire.

A tiny crescent-moon symbol shimmered beside the ancient Holiday Agreement.

Beneath it were seven mysterious words.

ONLY THE AUTHORIZED MAY CHANGE THE LAW.

Oksana went very quiet.

So did Rowan.

And THAT caught my attention.

Because Rowan had not voluntarily stopped talking since the day we met him.

I narrowed my eyes.

“All right, Horn Boy. What aren’t you telling us?”

He smiled.

“My dear Tara, whatever do you mean?”

I pointed directly at his face.

“THAT. That suspicious little demon smile!”

DeNae folded her arms.

“Oh, he’s definitely hiding something.”

I glanced toward the Witch’s Book.

Someone had stolen a page without breaking its protective spell.

Someone who already had permission to touch it.

And suddenly…

I had a very bad feeling.

TO BE CONTINUED…

🦇 DAY 2: ROWAN’S BUSINESS PRACTICES ARE CRIMINAL 🦇
DeNae’s Halloween Guild Diary

I woke up determined to get answers.

Instead, I found Rowan operating a small business in the manor’s dining room.

A sign above his table announced:

ROWAN’S DEMONIC SOLUTIONS
Every Curse Has a Price!
No Refunds. No Exchanges. No Exorcisms.

I stared at the sign.

“Absolutely not.”

“Good morning, my emerald enchantress!” Rowan greeted me.

“Don’t emerald-enchantress me. What are you selling?”

“Magical assistance! Protection charms! Emergency curse removal! Slightly used resurrection certificates!”

“Slightly USED?”

He waved away my concern.

“Details, darling.”

Tara appeared beside me, carrying what looked suspiciously like a cursed candle.

“DeNae! Rowan says he can tell us where the next enchanted object is!”

“For what price?”

“Nothing much!”

I looked at Rowan.

He cleared his throat.

“Only one treasured memory, three years of good luck, or a lifetime subscription to my premium haunting service.”

Lala walked in.

“Wonderful. Hell has a customer loyalty program.”

Julie began investigating Rowan’s inventory while John checked the contracts.

MAD discovered a beautiful antique compass that spun toward whatever its holder desired most.

Naturally, hers pointed toward a mysterious wine cellar.

“A woman after my own heart,” I told her.

Unfortunately, when Tara picked up the compass, it pointed directly toward a locked door at the end of the corridor.

“Adventure!” she announced.

“Poor judgment,” I corrected.

We followed her anyway.

John examined the ancient locking mechanism.

Julie noticed strange symbols carved into the frame.

And Oksana stopped dead in her tracks.

“That door,” she whispered. “It must remain closed.”

I turned toward her.

“Why?”

Before she could answer, Rowan appeared behind us.

“Oh, I wouldn’t worry about that little old thing.”

Which, coming from a demon selling used resurrection certificates, was spectacularly unconvincing.

Tara inserted yesterday’s silver key into the lock.

“TARA, WAIT!”

Click.

The door opened.

A violent gust of icy wind rushed into the hallway.

Every candle in the manor turned blue.

And from somewhere beyond the darkness, a voice whispered:

“THE KEEPER HAS RETURNED.”

We all looked at Oksana.

She had gone completely pale.

Rowan swallowed.

Lala broke the silence.

“Well, that’s comforting. Apparently someone here has a secret identity.”

I folded my arms.

“Oksana?”

She looked at us, then at the open doorway.

“There is something I should have told you.”

I sighed.

There ALWAYS is.

And somehow, I knew it would be more complicated than Rowan’s cancellation policy.

End of Day 2 — Discovered a demonic pyramid scheme. Opened forbidden door. Trust level declining rapidly.

https://i.imgur.com/XVdDuc5m.png

🧪 DAY THREE — CLUES BETTER NOT TO SEE
The Truth Potion That Nearly Destroyed Our Friendships
📍 Witch’s Book — The Forbidden Library

By Thursday morning, I’d reached three important conclusions.

ONE: Something was terribly wrong with the Witch’s Book.

TWO: Someone in this cottage knew more than they were admitting.

THREE: Rowan was WAY too cheerful for a demon whose contracts kept getting destroyed.

I decided it was time for an investigation.

Naturally, I appointed myself chief detective.

DeNae objected.

“On what qualifications?”

“I own a Handy Dandy Journal.”

“That’s not a qualification.”

“It’s a VERY good journal!”

Julie, thankfully, had made an actual discovery.

She’d spent hours studying the Witch’s Book and determined that its protective spell had never been broken.

Whoever removed page 248 must have had permission.

“AN INSIDE JOB!” I announced dramatically.

John inspected the locks and windows.

“No signs of forced entry.”

Lala looked directly at Rowan.

“I vote we interrogate the demon.”

Rowan pressed a hand to his chest.

“Such hostility toward a respectable professional.”

“Respectable?” DeNae repeated.

“Professional?” I added.

We all burst out laughing.

Oksana, however, wasn’t laughing.

She stood quietly beside the book, looking deeply troubled.

Alevtina opened her locked cabinet and removed a magnificent purple-and-green bottle.

“There’s one elixir that can reveal the last magical hand to touch the missing page.”

I immediately reached for it.

DeNae caught my wrist.

“Tara.”

“What?”

“Remember yesterday’s FIRE?”

“That was completely different!”

“It involved you touching something magical without knowing what it did.”

“You’re really holding onto that, aren’t you?”

Alevtina cleared her throat.

“The Witch’s Phial will reveal the truth. But it has a side effect.”

I paused.

“How bad?”

“Anyone who breathes its vapor must speak the absolute truth.”

Lala’s eyes lit up.

“OH, THIS IS GOING TO BE GOOD!”

📌 FOUND ITEM: WITCH’S PHIAL — MAGIC ELIXIRS COLLECTION

Alevtina uncorked the little bottle.

Purple mist swirled through the library.

Glowing fingerprints appeared across the Witch’s Book.

Then the potion reached John.

“I think Rowan’s cane makes him look like he’s auditioning for a villain in a musical.”

I SNORTED.

MAD suddenly blurted, “I’ve already been planning a Halloween martini party, and I’ve been hiding the good olives!”

Julie exclaimed, “I reorganized Alevtina’s recipes because her filing system was an absolute disaster!”

DeNae turned toward me.

“Sometimes I let Tara believe her ideas are brilliant because correcting her is EXHAUSTING!”

I gasped.

“DENAE!”

Then the vapor reached me.

“Sometimes I KNOW my ideas are terrible, but they’re so much more FUN!”

DeNae threw up her hands.

“I KNEW IT!”

Lala was laughing so hard she could barely breathe.

Until the mist touched her.

“I THINK ROWAN IS ACTUALLY HANDSOME WITH HORNS, AND I HATE THAT I’VE NOTICED!”

The room went silent.

Then I absolutely LOST IT.

“HAHAHAHA! LALA!”

Rowan straightened his burgundy jacket.

“My dear, I am deeply flattered.”

“YOU WILL BE DEEPLY FLATTENED IF YOU EVER MENTION THAT AGAIN!”

But our laughter died when the magical fingerprints began moving.

They floated above the table.

Across the book.

Through the shimmering air.

Past Julie.

Past John.

Past DeNae.

Past Rowan.

And stopped directly in front of…

OKSANA.

My heart sank.

“No.”

Oksana closed her eyes.

“I’m afraid so, Tara.”

I stared at her.

“Our mentor? OUR Oksana?”

Alevtina looked devastated.

“You stole my page?”

“I removed it,” Oksana answered softly. “But not to destroy Halloween.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“Then WHY?!”

Oksana explained that the ancient Holiday Agreement had become unfair.

For centuries, magical creatures had been allowed one night of freedom.

Only one.

And each passing year, the restrictions grew harsher.

Eventually, the agreement would collapse altogether.

“I tried to convince the magical council to change the rules,” Oksana said.

“For seventy-three years.”

DeNae blinked.

“SEVENTY-THREE YEARS?!”

Oksana nodded.

I folded my arms.

“Well, that’s officially the longest committee meeting in history.”

She continued.

“I removed the page to force the agreement to be reconsidered before it became too late.”

I looked at my mentor.

She hadn’t betrayed us.

She’d been trying to save two worlds from a terrible old promise.

But there was still one question.

I turned slowly toward Rowan.

“You KNEW.”

His smile vanished.

The remaining purple mist wrapped around his horns.

And he blurted:

“YES! I KNEW SHE TOOK IT!”

DeNae gasped.

Lala pointed.

“HA! GOT YOU, HORN BOY!”

Rowan looked absolutely horrified.

“And I helped her hide it.”

Alevtina reached for her broom.

I stepped between them.

“WAIT!”

Everyone froze.

Oksana explained that Rowan had once witnessed the original agreement.

He knew its flaws better than anyone.

And he’d secretly hoped we might discover a better solution.

I stared at him.

“So all your contracts and ridiculous offers were just distractions?”

“Not entirely,” he admitted. “Some were genuine business opportunities.”

Lala lunged.

John caught her.

“Easy, easy!”

Then the Witch’s Book began trembling.

The windows rattled.

The candles turned blood red.

Outside, the moon rose hours too early.

From beyond the village came a thousand whispers.

The Holiday Border was opening.

And this time, something enormous was pressing against it.

Oksana looked at me.

“Tara, we have until Halloween night to save the agreement.”

I tightened my grip on my Handy Dandy Journal.

“Then we’d better find a third option.”

DeNae sighed.

“Of course we need a third option.”

“What’s wrong with that?”

“Because the first two options were already TERRIBLE!”

🔮 DAY 3: OKSANA, WE NEED TO TALK 🔮
DeNae’s Halloween Guild Diary

I consider myself a reasonably tolerant person.

I’ve accepted magical portals.

I’ve accepted talking furniture.

I’ve even accepted Rowan’s unhealthy obsession with glitter.

But discovering that one of my fellow guild members was secretly connected to an ancient supernatural curse?

That required coffee.

Strong coffee.

Preferably with alcohol.

We gathered in the manor’s hidden chamber while Oksana finally explained everything.

Long ago, the mansion had belonged to an ancient magical order responsible for guarding the boundary between our world and the shadow realm.

Every generation, one guardian was chosen to protect the seal.

And Oksana?

Oksana was the last surviving Keeper of the Midnight Veil.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Tara gasped.

“YOU’RE A SECRET MAGICAL GUARDIAN?!”

Oksana nodded.

“Yes.”

“WITH ACTUAL POWERS?!”

“Yes.”

“AND YOU NEVER TOLD US?!”

“I was trying to protect everyone.”

I rubbed my temples.

“Tara, perhaps we could give her a moment before requesting an autograph.”

Oksana explained that the silver key was part of an ancient locking spell.

The manor hadn’t invited us to celebrate Halloween.

It had summoned us because the seal was breaking.

And if it failed completely, the creatures trapped beyond the Midnight Veil would be free.

I looked at Rowan.

“Did you know about this?”

He hesitated.

Which was answer enough.

“ROWAN.”

“Well, technically, I may have purchased certain commercial rights to the manor’s haunting activities.”

Lala blinked.

“You MONETIZED an ancient curse?”

Rowan straightened his jacket.

“Entrepreneurship is a gift.”

“You’re about to receive another gift,” I informed him. “A very firm kick.”

John interrupted before I could demonstrate.

He had examined the chamber’s ancient mechanism and discovered that the seal could be restored by returning three enchanted objects to their proper places.

Julie found the first inscription.

MAD spotted a hidden symbol reflected in a shaft of moonlight.

Lala decoded the second warning, largely by insulting the writer’s grammar.

And Tara?

Tara had found the final object.

A glowing crystal skull.

Naturally, she was holding it.

“Tara,” I said carefully, “put that down.”

“But DeNae—”

“DOWN.”

The skull began laughing.

Purple lightning shot across the ceiling.

The floor trembled.

Then an enormous shadow rose behind us.

I turned slowly.

A monstrous figure with burning eyes towered over the chamber.

Tara whispered, “Wow.”

Lala whispered something considerably less polite.

John moved protectively in front of the group.

Oksana raised her hands, and brilliant red-gold magic filled the chamber.

The creature recoiled.

But Oksana staggered.

The power was too much for one Keeper.

“She can’t do it alone!” Julie shouted.

And that was when I understood.

The manor hadn’t simply summoned Oksana.

It had summoned all of us.

I stepped beside her.

“Tell me what you need.”

Oksana looked at me.

“Everyone must stand together. The magic follows trust.”

I turned toward Tara.

My beautiful, reckless, infuriating little sister.

She smiled.

“See? I told you we were meant to come!”

I sighed.

“Tara, if we survive this, I’m charging you for emotional damages.”

Then I took her hand.

And the chamber erupted in light.

End of Day 3 — Discovered secret guardian. Threatened demon. Accidentally became part of ancient magical prophecy. Need vacation.

Guild Quest. Day 3. Witch's Book - Evil Wakes Up
Guild: Double D’s
https://i.imgur.com/kK4b3WWm.jpeg

🧪 DAY THREE — CLUES BETTER NOT TO SEE
📍 The Witch's Book - Alevtina's Cottage
🔮 FOUND: Gypsies Ointment — Magical Elixirs Collection

By Thursday morning, Alevtina had reached a conclusion: the greatest threat to civilization was not the premature arrival of evil spirits, rebellious weather, or even a festive gobbler with an appetite for furniture. It was Rowan. During the previous forty-eight hours, the demon had offered her magical catastrophe insurance, extended warranty on her cauldron, a subscription to weekly supernatural warnings, and a premium membership in something called the Infernal Preferred Customer Club. "You receive a complimentary pen," he explained. "Does it write in blood?" Alevtina asked. "Only when absolutely necessary." She was considering testing whether his elegant black suit was fireproof when Rowan made an unfortunate remark. Examineing the Witch's Book, he observed, "Extraordinary workmanship. Whoever removed that page left no trace of foreign magic." Alevtina froze. "Foreign magic?" "Quite." "Which means the thief had permission." Rowan's smile faltered. "I really must learn when to stop talking."

The Guild arrived to find Alevtina surrounded by bottles, jars, mysterious powders, and several objects that appeared to be watching her. Tara immediately announced, "WE HAVE A SUSPECT!" and pointed dramatically at Rowan. "Your evidence?" Julie asked. "He's a demon, he sells insurance, and he smiles too much!" "A compelling case," LaLa agreed. "Especially the insurance." DeNae unpacked breakfast and placed it beyond the reach of anything with more than one, two or more tails. "Before we accuse anyone of grand theft Halloween, perhaps we should investigate." John examined the torn binding through a magnifying glass. "No damage to the protective threads. Whoever did this knew exactly how to bypass the security." Oksana studied the ancient symbols surrounding the missing page. "Or the book recognized the thief as someone authorized to touch it." Mad admired a collection of jewel-colored elixirs glowing in the morning sunlight. "These bottles are gorgeous! The lighting is spectacular. Although that green one seems to be looking back at me." Alevtina snatched the green bottle away. "Don't flirt with the potion. It gets attached."

After consulting the Magical Elixirs collection, Alevtina selected a small amber jar labeled GYPSIES OINTMENT — REVEALS THE PATH OF HIDDEN HANDS. SIDE EFFECTS MAY INCLUDE UNWANTED HONESTY, INVOLUNTARY MEMORIES, AND TEMPORARY VISIBILITY OF THINGS BEST LEFT UNSEEN. The ointment was a ancient tracing preparation, capable of revealing magical fingerprints left on objects even after ordinary spells had faded. Unfortunately, its effects were notoriously unpredictable. "How unpredictable?" John asked. "Last time I used it, my broom confessed to having an affair with the vacuum cleaner," Alevtina replied. Tara looked delighted. "MAGICAL FORENSICS!" Julie carefully applied a tiny amount to the book's spine while Oksana spoke the activating words. A shimmering trail of golden fingerprints appeared on the binding. They rose into the air, crossed the kitchen, circled the table, and formed the unmistakable outline of a slender hand removing page 248. The Guild leaned forward. The hand belonged to someone wearing a distinctive silver ring bearing the symbol of the Holiday Border. Everyone turned towards Rowan, who was wearing exactly such a ring.

"Well, well, well," LaLa purred. "Our charming insurance salesman seems to have been caught with his fingers in the cookie jar." Rowan examined his ring with exaggerated surprise. "How terribly embarrassing. I assure you, there is a perfectly reasonable explanation." "Wonderful," DeNae replied. "We're listening." But before Rowan could speak, the ointment's side effect activated. Every object in the kitchen suddenly began to reach its most closely guarded secrets. The teapot announced that Alevtina had been watering down her expensive imported tea. The grandfather's clock confessed that it deliberately ran seven minutes fast because it enjoyed making people hurry. Tara's journal began reading its own entries aloud. "DAY ONE: POSSIBLE CONSPIRACY INVOLVING DEMONS, CLOUDS, AND THE CHICKEN INDUSTRY!" Julie raised an eyebrow. "The chicken industry?" Tara lunged for the journal. "THAT WAS A PRIVATE THEORY!" Mad's handbag announced that it contained emergency chocolate, two miniature bottles of gin, and a photograph of a particularly handsome Italian waiter. "That," Mad declared, "is privileged information!" John's wristwatch calmly informed everyone that he had checked the time fourteen times since breakfast. "Professional habit," he replied. "And at least my watch knows when to stop talking."

Unfortunately, the ointment had an even more troublesome effect. It revealed not only the thief's magical fingerprints but also the emotions surrounding the theft. The kitchen darkened. A ghostly image of the room appeared before them, showing events from the previous Monday night. Rowan stood beside the Witch's Book, but he was not alone. Alevtina herself appeared in the vision, standing opposite him with a solemn expression. The ghostly witch opened the book, touched page 248, and whispered something. The page rose from the binding, folded itself into a silver butterfly, and flew into Rowan's outstretched hand. Then Alevtina raised her wand and erased the memory of the meeting from her own mind. The vision vanished. For several seconds, nobody spoke. Then Tara whispered, "Okay. THAT was not in my conspiracy journal." Alevtina stared at her own hands. "I stole my own page?" "Technically," Rowan replied carefully, "you authorized its removal." "And you helped!" "I prefer the term facilitated." LaLa folded her arms. "Of course you do. 'Accomplice' looks terrible on a business card."

Oksana examined the remaining traces of the vision. "Alevtina, you erased your memory deliberately. There must have been a reason." Julie nodded. "And Rowan hasn't destroyed the page. He's protecting it." John studied the demon. "You knew the theft would weaken the border. You also knew we'd eventually investigate." Rowan's expression grew unusually serious. "Some agreements cannot be changed by those who remember making them. The old Halloween pact contains safeguards against alteration. Alevtina discovered a loophole, but she needed someone outside the witches' council to hold the page until the proper moment." "You?" Mad asked. "A demon with an excellent reputation for discretion," Rowan replied. "And a terrible reputation for salesmanship," DeNae added. "Both entirely deserved." Alevtina suddenly remembered something from the vision: the words she had whispered before removing the page. Let the future judge what the past refuses to change. She looked towards Rowan. "What was I trying to change?" The demon lowered his eyes. "That is the one question I was forbidden to answer until the final day."

The Guild spent the afternoon reversing the ointment's effects, which proved to be considerably more difficult than applying it. Tara's journal continued to announcing conspiracy theories, the kitchen chairs argued about who had the most important job, and Rowan's cane revealed that it wasn't actually necessary for walking but had been purchased because Rowan thought it made him look distinguished. "HA!" LaLa exclaimed. "Even your furniture thinks you're pretentious!" Eventually, Oksana and Julie discovered that a drop of ordinary honey neutralized the ointment. DeNae administered the antidote while Mad distracted the more talkative objects with compliments about their appearance. John helped Alevtina restore the kitchen's protective wards. When the final object fell silent, Rowan approached the witch. "Tomorrow is the last day before Halloween," he said quietly. "And the Holiday Border cannot remain undecided." Alevtina looked at the missing page. "Then tomorrow we decide what happens to it."

That night, the Guild gathered next to the fireplace, where the repaired mantelpiece still smelled faintly of chocolate. Alevtina finally understood that the theft had not an act of malice. She herself had it arranged, trusting Rowan to preserve a secret even she could no longer remember. But why would a witch deliberately weaken the very border she was sworn to protect?

As everyone prepared for bed, the Witch's Book suddenly opened by itself.

Across the empty space where page 248 belonged, glowing letters appeared:

THE OLD AGREEMENT PROTECTS THE BORDER.

THE NEW AGREEMENT MUST PROTECT BOTH SIDES.

Then the letters faded.

From the shadows, Rowan whispered, "At last. She's beginning to remember."

🧪 DAY 3 — WHAT THE WATER REMEMBERED
Found item: Nymph’s Extract
Guild: Double D’s Guild
“Familiars may touch the book,” Alevtina said.
The black cat stopped washing.
Rowan tapped his cane.
“An unfortunate moment to become curious.”
“That makes me considerably more curious,” Lala said.
I added three drops of Nymph’s Extract to a basin beside the torn binding.
A black paw appeared in the water.
Then the basin showed DeNae hiding biscuits.
“For emergencies.”
A silver tray revealed Tara examining Rowan’s coat pockets.
“Research.”
Every reflective surface began displaying something concealed.
John turned his watch facedown. Mad covered the mirror. Oksana threw a cloth over the polished globe.
“Only the basin,” she warned.
I steadied it while Alevtina touched the empty spine.
The water showed the black cat pressing his jeweled collar against the clasp.
The ward opened willingly.
He removed the page.
Behind him, the cream kitten flickered. He read the parchment, then looked toward a narrow violet opening beneath the book.
A pale hand reached through.
The cat surrendered the page.
The vision vanished.
“You gave it away,” I whispered.
His ears flattened.
“The agreement sends everything born beyond the Border home when Halloween ends. She came through alone. There was nobody looking for her.”
“What did the person offer?”
“Sanctuary.”
Rowan’s cane became very still.
I looked beneath the table. The kitten slept against the cat’s chest.
“Did they promise to help her,” I asked, “or did they promise to take the page?”
The cat opened his mouth.
Then closed it.
He had trusted someone who had been careful with their words.

🧪 DAY 3 — THE FURNITURE TAKES THE STAND
Found item: Nymph’s Extract
Guild: Double D’s Guild
The first drop of Nymph’s Extract landed on the table.
“It was the ribbon,” the table said.
The second landed on my chair.
“She leans back.”
I stood.
“Poorly,” it added.
Alevtina had intended to reveal memories of the missing page. Instead, every object touched by the spreading pink vapor acquired the ability to testify.
The rug accused Rowan of grinding soot into its fringe.
His cane declined to comment.
Tara’s journal complained about spelling.
“Traitor,” she whispered.
We opened the windows before the crockery could organize.
Julie kept the cats outside. Mad fanned vapor away from the shelves. John held a protesting window open while DeNae secured the bottle.
Oksana questioned the book.
“Who removed the page?”
“A trusted custodian.”
“Did they walk here?”
“No.”
I examined the ribbon bookmark.
Alevtina tugged it.
The ribbon tugged back.
“The house,” I said.
The walls went still.
“I appointed its protective spirit custodian of the library,” Alevtina admitted.
“So it has access.”
A floorboard lifted beneath my foot.
“Yes,” said the house.
“Where is the page?”
“Delivered.”
A narrow brass slot appeared in the wall. Its flap bore an old mark matching the one burned into Rowan’s envelope.
He stopped smiling.
“To whom?” Alevtina asked.
“Someone who offered relief from my annual obligations.”
“You sent our agreement to a stranger?”
“I have hosted three hundred and twelve Halloweens,” the house said. “Last year something nested in my plumbing.”
A pause.
“It is still there.”
From the upstairs bathroom came a small, indignant chirp.
