Julie’s version — Day 3
DAY 3 — DINNER ON THE ROAD

Found item: Martian-style Fish — “Martian Cuisine” collection
A Table for Two
DeNae passed around a bowl of snacks.
Tara took three.
“One each,” DeNae said.
“One for each hand,” Tara explained, “and one for my mouth.”
Grandpa John laughed.
“On my holiday deliveries, the cook always packed a little tasting portion for the courier. An old custom. The first taste was supposed to bring good luck to the celebration.”
“What did you choose?” I asked.
“Martian-style Fish.”
Lala wrinkled her nose.
“Did it still have eyes?”
“It had pink and violet stripes, a purple tail, and blue little garnishes along its back.”
“So it was dressed for the party,” Tara said.
Grandpa had been delivering a feast for the first dawn of the new season. The cook packed the fish on green leaves, with glossy red berries around it.
He stopped beside a ridge to eat his portion.
Below him stood a tiny survey hut. Its chimney was cold.
A woman came outside, carrying an empty fuel tin.
“She’d been waiting for a supply van,” Grandpa said. “It had broken down. She had enough emergency food, but nothing warm for the holiday.”
“Did you give her the fish?” I asked.
“Half.”
“Which half?” Lala asked. “I’d want the one without the tail.”
They sat on the hut’s doorstep and shared Grandpa’s dinner. The blue garnish tasted fresh and sharp. The fish was tender, with a sweet, smoky sauce.
As they ate, the sun rose over the ridge.
The woman lifted her little tin cup.
“Happy first dawn.”
Grandpa lifted his.
Then he continued to the celebration with the feast safely packed behind him.
“Did sharing your taste spoil the luck?” Oksana asked.
“I wondered that. But the party was splendid.”
“Then it worked twice,” I said.
Grandpa smiled.
Every new season afterward, the surveyor sent him a little parcel of red berries.
“Do you still recommend the fish?” DeNae asked.
“Oh, yes.”
I reached for the last snack, then broke it in two and handed half to Lala.
She inspected it.
“At least this one hasn’t got a tail.”

Lala’s version — Day 3
DAY 3 — DINNER ON THE ROAD
Found item: Martian-style Fish — “Martian Cuisine” collection
The Little Blue Garnish
Grandpa John said couriers used to taste one dish before delivering a holiday feast.
“Any dish?” Tara asked.
“Any dish the cook offered.”
“Could you taste all of them?”
DeNae gave her a look.
“Just checking.”
Grandpa had chosen Martian-style Fish.
It lay on green leaves, striped pink and violet, with a purple tail and a row of round blue garnishes.
“It was the prettiest dish on the list,” he said.
“That’s how they get you,” I told him.
The cook handed him a little tasting box.
“Eat the blue garnish last,” she said.
Grandpa nodded.
“Did you listen?” Oksana asked.
“I thought I had.”
He stopped beside a quiet stretch of road and opened his dinner.
The fish smelled wonderful. The sauce shone. A tiny red berry rolled against his fork.
Grandpa ate it.
For one lovely second, it tasted sweet.
Then his ears went hot.
Then his nose.
Then, according to Grandpa, his eyebrows.
“Eyebrows can’t be hot,” DeNae said.
“Mine made a special effort.”
He gulped water.
It didn’t help.
He fanned his mouth with the delivery papers.
“Did you breathe fire?” Tara asked hopefully.
“No. Though I checked.”
Then he remembered the little blue garnish.
He bit into one.
Coolness spread across his tongue. His eyes stopped watering. His ears stopped feeling like two frying pans.
The cook had arranged the dish so the hot berries and cooling blue garnishes balanced each other.
Grandpa finished every bite.
“Even the berries?” Julie asked.
“Carefully. With a blue garnish ready.”
When he reached the feast, he asked the cook for the recipe.
“So you recommend a dinner that nearly cooked your eyebrows?” I asked.
“It was delicious.”
“What do you tell people?”
“To follow the instructions.”
Tara glanced at the snack bowl.
“Are these spicy?”
“No,” DeNae said.
I pushed one toward Grandpa.
“Better check. You’re our expert.”

🔴🚚 MARS: STORIES OF THE OLD COURIER 🚚🔴
DAY THREE — THE GREAT MARTIAN DINNER DISASTER
👑💜 Tara's Adventure

There are three things you should never do on Mars: ignore a dust-storm warning, insult a Martian chef, or let Tara investigate the buffet unsupervised.

Grandpa John announced that tonight's story involved food.

DeNae immediately looked interested.

Lala asked whether there would be actual food or just another lecture.

I asked whether Martian cuisine involved telepathic vegetables.

Nobody answered me.

DINNER ON THE ROAD

Years ago, Grandpa had been hired to transport a magnificent banquet to the Festival of the First Dawn.

The destination was the settlement marked by the rising sun on Grandma's mysterious Drillil map!

"ANOTHER CONNECTION!" I shouted.

DeNae pointed at my notebook.

"Write it down quietly."

Grandpa explained that Martian tradition required the delivery courier to taste one dish before the celebration began.

The banquet contained thirty-seven unusual delicacies.

But one caught his attention.

MARTIAN JULIENNE!

A magnificent dish served in a blue crystalline bowl, decorated with brilliant red tendrils and glowing golden centers.

It was made from delicate cave-grown vegetables, creamy moonroot sauce, and tiny crimson spice blossoms.

Grandpa took one bite.

And promptly sneezed so violently that his courier hat landed in the ceremonial fountain.

Lala nearly choked laughing.

"SO THAT'S WHERE TARA GETS HER DRAMATIC TALENT!"

But the dish was extraordinary.

The flavors changed as you ate it, revealing sweet, savory, and fragrant layers without overwhelming the tongue.

Even better, the ingredients were harvested from crops grown in a hidden valley protected from the terrible Martian storms.

The village's ancient tradition was to share the very first harvest with travelers.

Grandpa said it was the finest meal of his life.

Naturally, I had questions.

"Did the food glow in your stomach?"

"No."

"Did you develop superpowers?"

"No."

"Did Grandma fall in love with you because you ate a ceremonial vegetable?"

Grandpa hesitated.

"Actually, she was quite impressed when I brought her the recipe."

AHA! ROMANCE THROUGH INTERPLANETARY CATERING!

CLIFFHANGER:

Grandpa reached into his old courier trunk and produced the original festival menu.

Behind the Martian Julienne was a handwritten note from Grandma.

The valley must survive. Protect the final harvest.

"What final harvest?" Julie whispered.

Grandpa looked toward the dark Martian horizon.

"That," he said, "is tomorrow's story."

🔴🚚 MARS: STORIES OF THE OLD COURIER 🚚🔴
DAY THREE — THE BUFFET THAT ALMOST ENDED IN DIVORCE
💚👑 DeNae's Adventure

I was finally excited about one of Grandpa's stories. It involved food, which is generally more reliable than Tara's theories.

Grandpa John announced that his next delivery had been an enormous banquet for the Festival of the First Dawn.

I immediately wanted to know how many guests were attending.

"About three hundred," Grandpa replied.

"How much food did they order?"

"Enough for five hundred."

I nodded approvingly.

Finally. People who understood the importance of feeding everyone.

DINNER ON THE ROAD

Martian tradition required the courier delivering a festive banquet to sample one dish before the celebration.

Grandpa had been offered thirty-seven different delicacies.

He chose Martian Julienne.

It was a spectacular little dish, with crimson vegetables, a golden center, and brilliant blue edible petals arranged around the bowl.

The recipe combined tender cave-grown vegetables, rich moonroot cream, and fragrant Martian blossoms.

Grandpa described it as the most extraordinary dish he had ever tasted.

Naturally, I asked for the recipe.

Grandpa handed me a faded card.

I studied it.

"Grandpa, these ingredients are absurdly expensive!"

"Your grandmother said exactly the same thing."

I liked Grandma more with every story.

Apparently, Grandpa had sneezed so violently after his first bite that his hat flew into the festival fountain.

Lala nearly fell off her chair laughing.

Julie wanted to know whether the dish was spicy.

Grandpa assured us it could be prepared quite mild.

"Excellent," I said. "Tara and I can eat that."

Tara was busy trying to convince Oksana that the glowing blue petals were capable of transmitting thoughts.

Then Grandpa explained something wonderful.

The festival celebrated the first successful harvest in a hidden Martian valley.

For generations, families had shared their first crops with travelers, ensuring nobody went hungry.

That was a tradition I could appreciate.

THE EVENING'S FINAL DISASTER:

Grandpa decided we should recreate the dish.

Julie helped prepare the vegetables.

Oksana measured ingredients.

I supervised the kitchen.

Lala provided running commentary.

Tara volunteered to test whether the petals glowed under ultraviolet light.

She knocked over an entire bowl of sauce.

Onto Grandpa.

Onto his magnificent mustache.

Grandpa looked like he'd lost a fight with a Martian cheese fountain.

Lala whispered, "Well, at least we know what happened to the extra cream."

I handed Tara a towel.

"YOU'RE CLEANING THAT UP."

Some things are universal.
Especially having a younger sister. 🍲💚🤣

Julie’s version — Day 4
DAY 4 — THE MOST EXPENSIVE CARGO
Found item: Martian Fruit — “Products of the Red Planet” collection
Enough for a Garden
“What was the most expensive thing you ever carried?” Tara asked.
Grandpa John thought about it.
“One piece of fruit.”
Lala stared at him.
“Was it made of diamonds?”
“No.”
“Did it belong to a king?”
“No.”
“Did the king know you had it?”
Grandpa laughed. “There was no king.”
The Martian Fruit had traveled inside a temperature-controlled case with three locks. Guards checked Grandpa’s papers twice, and the route was kept secret. Before departure, the recipient called personally.
“Do not let it freeze,” she said.
Then she called back.
“And do not let it get warm.”
DeNae frowned. “That seems unnecessarily difficult.”
“That was my feeling too.”
“What did you think was inside?” I asked.
“A jewel. Possibly something alive.”
Tara leaned closer. “Technically fruit is alive.”
Lala pointed at her. “Do not encourage the fruit.”
Only after Grandpa left could he open the cargo instructions.
Inside the case sat one Martian Fruit—red and strange-looking, with a tough outer skin and bright flesh beneath it.
The note explained why it was worth more than his van.
Inside were twelve viable seeds.
A blight had destroyed nearly every fruit-bearing plant in a small settlement farther north. Scientists believed these seeds could survive in the damaged soil.
“So you were carrying an orchard,” Oksana said.
“Potentially.”
Halfway there, the case alarm sounded.
The cooling system had failed.
The fruit had to remain within a very narrow temperature range or the seeds could become useless.
Grandpa pulled into a supply depot and bought every cooling pack they had.
“With your own money?” DeNae asked.
“Every last credit.”
“Of course you did.”
He wrapped the case in blankets, tucked the cooling packs around it, and drove the final hours with one eye on the temperature gauge.
The fruit arrived intact.
Months later, Grandpa received a photograph.
Children stood beside a row of young trees.
One little girl was holding a watering can almost as large as she was.
I looked at Grandpa.
“One fruit did all that?”
“One fruit gave them twelve chances.”
“And how many grew?” Tara asked.
Grandpa smiled.
“Eleven.”
“What happened to the twelfth?” Lala asked.
“Someone planted it upside down.”
There was a pause.
Tara slowly opened her journal.
Oksana shook her head.
“No.”
“I didn’t say anything.”
“You were about to.”

Lala’s version — Day 4
DAY 4 — THE MOST EXPENSIVE CARGO

Found item: Martian Fruit — “Products of the Red Planet” collection
Do Not Eat the Cargo
“Three guards checked the shipment,” Grandpa John said. “The route was secret. The recipient called me twice.”
Tara’s eyes lit up.
“Treasure.”
“Fruit.”
I folded my arms.
“No.”
Grandpa nodded.
“Yes.”
“It had better be extremely impressive fruit.”
According to the shipping papers, the Martian Fruit was worth more than Grandpa’s van, his boots, his furniture, and everything in his kitchen.
DeNae looked horrified.
“Even the biscuit tin?”
“Even the biscuit tin.”
That was serious.
The fruit grew only in one small region of Mars. Its skin developed a natural compound that changed color when exposed to certain toxic gases.
Mining crews used slices of the peel as cheap emergency detectors.
“If the peel darkened,” Grandpa explained, “you got out.”
“That is considerably more useful than an apple,” Oksana said.
The shipment was headed for a mine scheduled to reopen before dawn.
Its electronic gas sensors had failed.
“And one fruit was the backup plan?” Julie asked.
“One very expensive fruit.”
Grandpa had been warned not to bruise it.
So naturally, halfway there, he hit a pothole.
Tara gasped.
“I said one pothole.”
“That is enough pothole.”
Grandpa stopped and opened the outer case.
The Martian Fruit was still intact.
Mostly.
One small patch of peel had turned dark.
Grandpa stared at it.
Then he remembered the instructions.
The peel changed color around toxic gas.
He stepped away from the vehicle and called the mine inspector.
She arrived with a detector.
There was a leaking fuel canister in the cargo compartment.
“So the fruit detected danger before it even reached the mine?” Julie asked.
“Exactly.”
Grandpa transferred the case to the inspector’s vehicle and followed at a safe distance.
The mine used the fruit peel until replacement sensors arrived.
Grandpa received a bonus.
DeNae nodded approvingly. “Enough for new boots?”
“And a full biscuit tin.”
I considered this.
“So the most expensive thing you ever carried was fruit that complained about the air.”
Grandpa smiled.
“That is one way of describing it.”
Tara was already writing.
I leaned over.
She had written:
TEST ALL FRUIT FOR SECRET ABILITIES.
I took the journal away from her.
“No.”
“I haven’t done anything yet.”
“That sentence has never reassured me.”

🍎 DAY 4 — THE MOST EXPENSIVE CARGO
📌 FOUND: Martian Fruit — Red Planet Products Collection

🍎🔴💰 The next evening, Grandfather was polishing an old brass compass when we arrived, and I noticed a peculiar wooden box sitting on his desk. It was small, beautifully carved, and secured with three locks. "What's in there?" I asked. Grandfather smiled mysteriously. "A reminder of the most expensive cargo I ever carried." Tara immediately reached for the box. DeNae caught her wrist. "Perhaps we should ask before opening things worth a fortune." "You're no fun," Tara complained. Grandfather chuckled. "Many years ago, I was assigned to deliver a single container from the Royal Botanical Conservatory to the distant settlement of Silver Basin. The security arrangements were extraordinary. My identity was checked four times, my route was classified, and the recipient personally contacted me to warn that the cargo must never be exposed to direct sunlight, extreme cold, or sudden movement." Lala whistled. "What were you transporting, the Emperor's crown?" "Something considerably valuable more," Grandfather replied. "A piece of fruit."

🍎🌿✨ The fruit was known as the Martian Heartapple , a rare species that produced fruit only once every thirty-three Martian years in the hidden orchards beneath the ancient polar ice. It resembled a small, spiney apple with deep ruby-red skin, faint golden veins, and a delicate green stem that curled into a perfect spiral. Under ordinary light it looked unremarkable, but in darkness its veins glowed softly, pulsing like a tiny heartbeat. The Heartapple possessed an extraordinary biological property: its seeds could restore fertility to Martian soil that had been exhausted by centuries of mineral extraction. A single mature fruit contained enough viable seeds to transform an entire barren valley into productive farmland. Unfortunately, the trees were extraordinarily difficult to cultivate, and fewer than twenty mature specimens existed anywhere on Mars. The fruit Grandfather carried represented the last hope of Silver Basin, where the agricultural houses were failing and the colony faced abandonment. "How much was it worth?" little DeNae asked. Grandfather leaned forward. "More than every vehicle in my courier company's fleet—combined." Tara gasped. "I'd have wrapped it in seventeen blankets!" "I considered twenty," Grandfather admitted.

🚚🏜⚠ The journey began under heavy escort, but after crossing the Red Meridian Pass, Grandfather received an urgent message: a massive dust storm had blocked the main road, and his security vehicles were being called to assist stranded travelers. He would have to complete the final hundred kilometers alone. The Heartapple rested inside a temperature-controlled case mounted on a special suspension platform, its delicate golden veins glowing through the inspection window. Every bump made Grandfather wince. Every unfamiliar noise convinced him the fruit was about to explode, rot, or somehow become more expensive. Then, just as he entered the desolate Glass Plains, the truck's cooling system failed. Warning lights flashed crimson, and the container temperature began rising. Grandfather pulled over and desperately searched for a solution. "I had repaired engines, generators, and even a malfunctioning coffee dispenser," he told us. "But nobody had ever taught me how to perform emergency surgery on a priceless apple."

🌱💚🌌 With no replacement parts available, Grandfather carried the container into the shadow of an ancient stone archway, hoping the cooler air would slow the damage. There he noticed something astonishing. The fruit's golden veins had begun pulsing faster, and tiny threads of green light were extending from its stem toward the dusty ground. When one thread touched the soil, a miniature sprout appeared. Within seconds, delicate leaves unfurled from the lifeless red dust. Grandfather stared in disbelief. The Heartapple wasn't dying—it was attempting to grow! He remembered a passage from an old botanical manual explaining that the fruit's regenerative properties were activated by mineral-rich soil and the absence of artificial temperature regulation. The elaborate preservation system, designed to protect the fruit, had actually been suppressing its natural abilities. "So what did you do?" Julie asked breathlessly. "I made the most expensive gardening decision in Martian history," Grandfather replied. "I planted it."

🌳✨🍎 Grandfather carefully placed the Heartapple in a shallow hollow the archway and covered it with a thin layer of Martian soil. The fruit split open, releasing a brilliant green-gold light that spread through the ground like lightning beneath glass. Roots raced outward, the ancient stone arch trembled, and a slender silver-barked tree rose from the dust, its branches unfolding beneath the stars. By dawn, the tree stood nearly three meters tall, covered in shimmering leaves and dozens of tiny ruby-colored blossoms. The surrounding wasteland had transformed into a circle of lush green vegetation. Grandfather contacted Silver Basin in a panic, convinced he had destroyed the colony's most valuable possession. Instead, the settlement's chief botanist, Dr. Amara Solen, arrived and fell to her knees in astonishment. "You've done it!" she cried. "Nobody has successfully germinated a Heartapple outside the polar orchards in two hundred years!" Grandfather looked at the growing tree. "Does that mean I won't have to pay for the fruit?"

🍎❤👴 The tree became the foundation of a vast agricultural restoration project, eventually producing enough seeds to revive the failing farms of Silver Basin and several neighboring settlements. The colony survived, and the Heartapple's extraordinary properties revolutionized Martian soil regeneration. Grandfather received a small wooden box containing a single preserved seed, presented by the grateful colonists. He opened the box for us, revealing a tiny ruby-red seed resting on a cushion of dark velvet. "And that's why this was my most expensive cargo," he explained. "Not because of its price, but because of the lives and futures depending on it." Oksana studied the seed with quiet fascination. "One small thing changed an entire world." Julie smiled. "And all because you were brave enough to plant it." Lala grinned. "Or reckless enough to destroy the evidence." Grandfather roared with laughter. Tara immediately asked whether we could plant the seed in the garden. "Absolutely not!" DeNae exclaimed. "We don't need a forest growing through the roof!" I examined the little seed and wondered whether it might still be alive. Grandfather winked at me. "Careful, lad. On Mars, even the smallest things sometimes have very big plans."
