Нaгa покачала головой.

Нaгa впервые улыбнулась.

✨ GUILD QUEST - 🐊🌿 SWAMP CRYPT: THE MAP DON'T LIE
Tara'S Handy Dandy Official Account of Five Days in a Swamp That Clearly Had Opinions
🌿 PROLOGUE — THE MAP, THE SWAMP & THE MAN WHO WAS ABOUT TO LEARN SOMETHING

There are people who trust maps. Then there was Henry. Henry didn't just trust maps. Henry believed maps were civilization's highest achievement, somewhere above indoor plumbing and just below pencils. He could unfold a map on a windy day without swearing. He knew what contour lines meant. He could identify north without spinning around three times and pointing confidently towards a gift shop. Naturally, I distrusted him immediately. Not because I dislike maps. I love maps. I have fourteen tucked into my Handy Dandy Journal, including one showing suspected fairy migration routes, another indicating possible extraterrestrial energy corridors, and one John drew specifically to illustrate the location of "Absolutely Nothing Alien". I decorated that one with stars. Our trouble began when Oksana summoned the Guild and placed an old parchment map on the table. It smelled like mud, moss, smoke and something ancient enough to have watched entire civilizations make questionable decisions.

Across the top were the words: SWAMP CRYPT
DeNae looked at it. "No." Julie leaned closer. "Interesting." Laura whispered, "It's beautiful." Lala poked one blackened corner. "It looks contagious." John crossed his arms. "It's a map." I adjusted my bejeweled tinfoil tiara. "Exactly what the map wants you to think." John closed his eyes. Rowan Sparkle Goblin appeared from under the table wearing miniature swamp boots, carrying a lantern, and somehow already covered in glitter. Oksana ignored all of us. "Henry disappeared into this swamp years ago while following this map." "Disappeared?" Laura asked. "Temporarily." "That is an extremely important adverb," Julie said. Oksana smiled. "He returned."

I immediately wrote: IMPORTANT: MAN ENTERS SENTIENT SWAMP. RETURNS. PROBABLY CHANGED FOREVER. ALIENS POSSIBLE. John leaned over my shoulder. "Why aliens?" "Why not aliens?" "Because we're going to a swamp." "That has never stopped aliens before."

Oksana continued. "The old route has begun appearing again." A faint black line crawled across the parchment. By itself. Everyone went quiet. I slowly turned towards John. John stared at the map. I stared at John. The line moved again. John sighed.

"Humidity."

I wrote: DAY ZERO: HUMIDITY HAS LEARNED CARTOGRAPHY.

And that was how the Guild went into the swamp.

🐊 DAY 3 — “THE SHORT ROAD”
Found Item: Swamp Adder — “Predators of the Mari” Collection
The western detour would have taken most of the day.
Henry’s shortcut would take three hours.
“The mathematics are compelling,” he explained.
“So was the Naga,” John said.
For the first hour, nothing happened.
Henry became unbearable.
Then the reeds began moving behind us.
Large tracks appeared in the mud.
And eyes started surfacing in the water.
“Seven,” Tara whispered.
“Stop counting,” Laura said.
“I’m gathering intelligence.”
Then something enormous dropped from a branch directly in front of Henry.
A Swamp Adder.
Henry froze.
The snake slithered across our path and stopped.
We moved left.
It blocked us.
Right.
Blocked again.
John slowly lowered the branch he'd picked up.
“It isn't attacking.”
Julie watched the adder.
“It’s stopping us.”
The snake turned and disappeared through the reeds.
Tara grinned.
“We have a snake guide.”
Lala sighed. “Of course we do.”
We followed.
Henry complained for approximately nine minutes.
Then the earth behind us collapsed.
The straight route vanished into a flooded sinkhole so deep we never heard the falling debris hit bottom.
Nobody spoke.
Henry looked at his map.
The supposedly short line was still there.
Except now it stretched farther across the page than it had that morning.
The adder waited ahead.
Henry stared at it.
Then did something none of us expected.
He crossed out his shortcut.
Beside it, he drew the route the snake had shown us.
Tara leaned toward John.
“Did Henry just admit the map was wrong?”
“No,” Henry said without looking up.
“The map lacked current information.”
Lala smiled.
“Baby steps.”
That evening, Henry didn't ask his map where we should camp.
He watched where the birds settled.
Checked the water.
And chose high ground.
Oksana noticed.
She said nothing.
But she smiled. 🐊🌿🗺

🥾 DAY 1 — “THERE’S SUPPOSED TO BE A ROAD HERE”

According to Henry’s map, there was a road.

According to our feet, there was approximately four feet of black swamp water.

These two facts were not compatible.

John stood ankle-deep in muck studying the map.

Julie studied the trees.

DeNae studied our supplies.

Laura tried not to step on anything living.

Lala had already named a frog Reginald.

I held my Handy Dandy Journal above my head while Rowan Sparkle Goblin rode on DeNae’s backpack like a tiny glitter-covered swamp general.

“The road is here,” John said.

I gestured broadly at the water.

“Excellent. Someone inform the road.”

Henry’s old notes said he had done exactly what John was now doing—checked the compass, checked the landmarks and concluded that the swamp must have changed.

Which was fair.

Except the swamp seemed to be changing while we were standing in it.

Julie tied a strip of cloth around a cypress branch.

We walked twenty yards.

I looked back.

The cloth was gone.

“That’s odd,” Julie said.

Lala pointed ahead.

“There it is.”

The same strip of cloth hung from a tree in front of us.

Laura stared.

“No.”

DeNae immediately handed everyone snacks.

She does this whenever reality becomes unreliable.

Apparently crackers restore confidence in the laws of physics.

Then the bluish lights appeared.

They flickered beneath the water between tree roots, drifting beside us like stars that had fallen into the swamp.

I stopped.

Fairies.

Definitely fairies.

Three tiny glowing faces peeked from behind a cypress trunk.

One waved.

I waved back.

John saw me.

“No.”

“I didn’t say anything.”

“You’re waving at the swamp.”

“It waved first.”

“It did not.”

A fairy stuck her tongue out at him.

I wrote that down.

Henry’s notes said he had found a Flare from the In Search of Danger collection on his first day.

We found it beneath a half-submerged marker post.

Old brass casing. Dry despite everything. One pull-ring.

John examined it.

“Emergency flare.”

“Magical flare,” I corrected.

“Emergency flare.”

“Why can’t it be both?”

Henry had apparently used his when darkness fell and the disappearing trail marks left him surrounded by black water.

So we did the same.

I pulled the ring.

The flare exploded upward in brilliant crimson.

For three glorious seconds, the entire swamp lit up.

Trees.

Water.

Roots.

Mist.

And hundreds—hundreds—of tiny marks carved into trunks surrounding us.

Arrows.

All pointing different directions.

Laura whispered, “Oh dear.”

Then the flare illuminated something else.

Our own footprints.

They were ahead of us.

Not behind us.

Ahead.

DeNae looked at them.

Then at me.

Then at the crackers.

“I’m going to need stronger snacks.”

That, according to Henry’s journal, was the first moment he truly doubted the map.

Not because the road was missing.

Not because the water glowed.

Not even because his trail markers moved.

Because the map showed him walking north.

But his own footprints showed that somehow he had already approached the exact same spot from the south.

Twice.

John stared at the map.

I stared at John.

“Humidity?” I asked.

John folded the map.

“Go to sleep, Tara.”

I wrote:

DAY 1 CONCLUSION: MAP SUSPICIOUS. SWAMP SENTIENT. JOHN STILL FIGHTING FOR HIS LIFE.

🥾 DAY 1 — DeNae’s Perspective

“I Packed for a Swamp. I Did Not Pack for a Swamp With Opinions.”

I knew this trip was going to be a problem the moment John announced, very confidently, that there was supposed to be a road where we were currently standing in black water.

I looked at the map.

Then at the water.

Then at my carefully packed supplies.

“Fantastic,” I said. “I brought trail mix for a road.”

Tara, naturally, was delighted. She was waving at blue lights in the trees, arguing that fairies had greeted her, and holding that Handy Dandy Journal over her head like it contained the last surviving copy of the Constitution.

John said the lights were natural.

Tara said one of them waved.

I handed her crackers.

This is what I do when reality starts becoming unreliable.

Feed people.

Julie tied a marker to a tree.

Twenty minutes later, the marker was in front of us.

Laura looked horrified.

Lala looked impressed.

Tara looked vindicated.

John looked personally betrayed by cartography.

I looked at the snack bag.

Still there.

Good.

Then Tara set off the flare.

Red light exploded over the swamp and revealed hundreds of carved arrows pointing in every direction.

And our own footprints.

Ahead of us.

I stared at them.

Then at Tara.

Then at the crackers in my hand.

“I’m going to need stronger snacks.”

That was the moment I established my mission for the week.

Not finding the crypt.

Not solving the mystery.

Not proving whether the swamp was sentient.

Keeping this ridiculous group fed, equipped, calm, and mostly uneaten until somebody figured out where the hell the road went.

By bedtime, I had reorganized the supplies, waterproofed the food, moved the first-aid kit to the top of my pack, and written one new rule:

If Tara says, “This is amazing,” prepare for immediate danger.

Day one complete.

🐊 DAY 3 — “THE SHORT ROAD”
Found Item: Swamp Adder — “Predators of the Mari” Collection
Henry's shortcut lasted fifty-three peaceful minutes.
Then the swamp began following us.
Reeds shifted behind us.
Tracks appeared beside us.
Eyes watched from the water.
Tara counted seven before I convinced her to stop.
Then the Swamp Adder appeared.
It dropped directly across Henry's route.
Henry stepped left.
The snake moved left.
He stepped right.
So did the snake.
“It's blocking us,” John said.
Henry sighed. “I noticed.”
But Julie noticed something else.
“It could have attacked.”
It hadn't.
The adder turned and disappeared through the reeds.
Then stopped.
Waiting.
I looked at Henry.
“Maybe we follow it?”
“My map—”
“Henry.”
He looked at me.
For once, I didn't argue.
Neither did he.
We followed the snake.
Minutes later, a tremendous cracking sound came from behind us.
The ground along Henry's shortcut collapsed into a deep flooded hole.
Henry stood staring at it for a long time.
The adder had not trapped us.
It had saved us.
That evening, Henry unfolded his map.
He crossed out the shortcut.
Then carefully drew the path the snake had shown us.
I smiled.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“You're smiling.”
“You changed the map to match the swamp.”
“I updated it.”
“Of course.”
Later, when we stopped for the night, Henry didn't consult his map.
He watched the birds.
Checked the waterline.
Tested the ground.
Then chose our campsite.
Oksana caught my eye.
Neither of us said anything.
Henry wasn't lost.
For the first time, I thought he might actually be learning where he was. 🌿🐍✨

🐍 DAY 2 — “A MINOR CORRECTION”

Henry had apparently awakened on Day Two, noticed a discrepancy on the map and calmly corrected it with a pencil.

Then another.

Then another.

By lunch, he had eleven corrections.

I respected this immensely.

Not because it made sense.

Because it represented commitment.

Julie had taken charge of our map by then.

She had marked three shifting trails, two submerged markers, one tree that seemed to move when nobody watched it and a section labeled:

LALA CLAIMS THIS STUMP INSULTED HER. UNCONFIRMED.

“It did,” Lala said.

The stump made a creaking noise.

“See?”

Then a new line appeared on the map.

Right in front of us.

Ink spread slowly across the parchment.

Nobody touched it.

Nobody breathed.

I slowly raised my finger.

John said, “Don’t.”

“I haven’t said anything.”

“You’re about to.”

“I was just going to suggest—”

“No aliens.”

“It could be swamp fairies.”

“No.”

“Interdimensional cartographers?”

“No.”

“Ghost surveyors?”

“Tara.”

I wrote all three possibilities down.

The new line led us to an ancient stone platform rising above the water.

Roots twisted over it like giant fingers.

Symbols glowed along the stones.

And lying between two roots was our next find:

The Dressing of Naga from the Swamp Beast collection.

It looked like ceremonial armor—scales woven with dark metal and river pearls.

Julie crouched beside it.

“This wasn’t abandoned.”

“How can you tell?” Laura asked.

Julie pointed.

“It’s clean.”

That was when the water moved.

Not rippled.

Moved.

Something long circled the platform beneath the surface.

Then another.

Then a third.

DeNae quietly handed me a protein bar.

“Why are you giving me food now?”

“Because you make worse decisions hungry.”

Fair.

A head rose from the black water.

Human eyes.

Serpentine face.

Silver-green scales.

Then shoulders.

Then an enormous coiled body.

Laura grabbed Lala.

Lala grabbed Laura.

Julie froze.

John stepped between us and the creature.

I whispered:

“THIS IS AMAZING.”

The Naga looked directly at me.

“You are very loud.”

I gasped.

“I didn’t say that aloud.”

“No.”

I immediately wrote:

TELEPATHIC SNAKE PERSON. JOHN CAN DEAL WITH THAT LATER.

The armor belonged to him.

Or more specifically, to his people.

Henry had discovered this the hard way years earlier after picking it up and attempting to classify it as “local ceremonial equipment.”

The Naga apparently emerged from the water and asked:

“Why are you wearing my shoulder guard as a hat?”

Henry had replied:

“I was testing its function.”

This is why I liked Henry.

Our meeting went better.

Mostly.

The Naga introduced himself as Sareth.

He told us Henry had passed through long ago.

“He believed the map knew the swamp.”

Sareth’s mouth curved into something dangerously close to amusement.

“The swamp knew the map.”

Then he gave us the same warning he had given Henry:

“Tomorrow, do not take the direct road.”

John nodded.

Julie nodded.

DeNae nodded.

Laura nodded.

Even Lala nodded.

I looked at the map.

There was indeed a very convenient direct road.

Sareth looked at me.

“Especially you.”

Rude.

As we left, he retrieved the ceremonial dressing.

Then tossed something toward Rowan.

A tiny scaled belt.

Rowan put it on immediately.

I wrote:

DAY 2 CONCLUSION: NAGA REAL. FASHION EXCELLENT. SWAMP KNOWS MAP. JOHN REFUSING TO DISCUSS TELEPATHY.
