https://upforme.ru/uploads/0019/3c/8c/7219/t813441.pngJour 2 La physique ne peut pas se tromper
Guilde To the Manor Born

⚡ DAY 2 — PHYSICS CANNOT BE WRONG

Leo woke up determined to leave the emotional complexities of kitchen appliances behind and return to something dependable.

Science.

Measurements.

Physics.

This seemed reasonable.

It lasted until 9:17 a.m.

The Tellurion looked like a cross between an astronomical instrument, a gyroscope, and something an alien grandmother might keep in her living room.

Leo calibrated it three times.

Julie checked his calculations.

John checked Julie’s calculations.

Then John checked Leo’s calibration.

Then DeNae brought sandwiches because this had clearly become an event.

Leo activated the device.

Saturn appeared on the central display.

Its rings rotated.

The moon positions aligned.

A gravitational reading flashed across the screen.

John frowned.

“That’s wrong.”

Leo ran the experiment again.

Same result.

Julie leaned closer.

“That would imply the local gravitational constant is varying.”

John looked offended.

“Constants do not vary.”

Lala whispered to me, “He sounds personally betrayed.”

I whispered back, “Physics has cheated on him.”

John looked at us.

“I can hear you.”

By lunchtime, the table had disappeared beneath sheets of calculations.

Leo paced.

John recalculated.

Julie created three organized stacks labeled:

Possible Error

Unlikely Error

and

Absolutely Impossible

The impossible pile was the largest.

The Tellurion continued calmly reporting that gravity around the station was changing by tiny amounts depending on who entered the room.

When Leo stood beside it, gravity increased.

When Laura approached, it decreased.

When Lala walked past, the readings briefly formed what looked suspiciously like a smiley face.

“That is not scientifically meaningful,” John announced.

Lala walked past again.

The display produced another smiley face.

I wrote:

OBSERVATION #2: SCIENCE MAY HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOR.

“No,” John said.

“You need your own journal.”

“I do not need a journal.”

“You clearly have a lot of feelings.”

“I have measurements.”

Across the room I caught sight of a tall silver-haired Pleiadian woman reflected in the Tellurion’s polished surface.

She smiled.

Then pointed toward the floor.

I followed her gesture.

Tiny glowing threads were running underneath the metal panels.

I crouched.

Gone.

“Tara?”

John was watching me.

“Dropped my pen.”

“You’re holding your pen.”

“My other pen.”

DeNae appeared beside me and silently handed me a cookie.

She does this when she knows I am seeing something no one else can see.

No questions.

Just carbohydrates.

By late afternoon Leo had developed an explanation.

“The device is detecting localized electromagnetic interference caused by the station’s aging power network.”

John nodded slowly.

“That is at least plausible.”

Rowan tilted his head.

“Is it?”

Both men turned.

Rowan smiled pleasantly.

They disliked that.

Then Oksana walked into the room, glanced once at the readings, and asked:

“Have you considered that the station is compensating?”

Leo stopped.

“For what?”

Oksana smiled.

“You.”

Then she left.

There are times when I believe Oksana enjoys this far too much.

That night, I added another line to my journal:

SATURN DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE BREAKING THE LAWS OF PHYSICS.

IT APPEARS TO BE NEGOTIATING WITH THEM.

⚡ DAY 2 — Physics Has Become a Personal Matter

Today Leo and John discovered that Saturnian physics does not care about their feelings.

This did not go well.

The Tellurion kept giving impossible readings. Julie checked the numbers. John checked Julie’s numbers. Leo checked the machine. Then John checked Leo checking the machine.

By lunch, I had two highly intelligent men standing over pages of calculations looking like Saturn itself had insulted their mothers.

Tara, of course, was having a wonderful time.

She suggested the station was “negotiating with gravity.”

John said no.

The machine produced another impossible reading.

Tara smiled.

I handed John trail mix before he could begin a speech about universal constants.

Sometimes the most useful thing a person can do is not solve the problem.

Sometimes it is making sure the people trying to solve the problem have eaten.

STATUS REPORT:
Leo — offended by numbers
John — in a committed relationship with physics, currently betrayed
Tara — one impossible reading away from declaring victory
Julie — calm, organized, mildly fascinated
Lala — making jokes at unsafe intervals
Laura — still worried about whether the equipment is stressed
Rowan — suspiciously unsurprised
Oksana — knows more than she is saying. Obviously.

Guild Quest. Day 1. Saturn - Don't Touch It…It's Working!
Guild: Double D's

GUILD QUEST — 🪐🔧 SATURN: DON'T TOUCH IT, IT'S WORKING
Five days of station repairs, where the repairman himself was occasionally the problem.

Leo told me he could fix almost anything. The few things that had permanently stopped working after meeting him, he explained, had been hopeless from the beginning. As a pilot, I found this philosophy considerably more entertaining when he was standing nowhere near my airplane. However, when Oksana invited our Explorers Guild to accompany him on an inspection of an old research station on Saturn, I packed my bag. Someone would need to keep Lala away from the buttons.

The station floated above amber cloud banks beneath rings that stretched across the observation windows like scratches in a golden record. Its previous crew had departed after reporting rebellious household appliances, impossible laboratory readings, robots ignoring instructions, and a power grid operating on principles nobody understood. Leo read their report twice. “Deferred maintenance,” he pronounced, with the confidence of a man who had not yet encountered the plumbing. He considered the assignment practically a vacation.

Oksana distributed room assignments, emergency lights, and small welcome gifts with her usual unnerving efficiency. DeNae inspected the pantry and the expenses ledger. Julie organized the station maps. Laura checked that everyone had settled in, while Tara searched the corridor for extraterrestrial footprints and Lala discovered a switch labeled PLEASE RECONSIDER . Twenty minutes after our arrival, the coffee maker served everyone except Leo. He rolled up his sleeves. Apparently, Saturn had made its first mistake.

DAY 1 — “IT'S JUST A COFFEE MAKER”
FOUND: Coffee Maker — “Saturn Technology” collection

By morning, Leo had declared war on breakfast. The Coffee Maker stood beneath a circular window, its copper belly gleaming in the honey-colored light, its glass pipes carrying tiny spirals of blue steam. It had prepared DeNae's coffee exactly as she liked it, produced a delicate foamy leaf for Julie, and given me something strong enough to negotiate a docking maneuver. For Leo, it illuminated a single message: OTHER CUSTOMERS ARE AVAILABLE. “Selective dispensing fault,” he announced. “It's just a coffee maker.” Somewhere inside it, a valve made a noise remarkable like a snort.

He dismantled it across three tables, checked its connections, polished its sensors, and extracted a hair-thin green filament from behind the brewing chamber. “Foreign matter,” he said, setting it aside. Once everything was reassembled, he solemnly declared the machine functional. It immediately brewed a magnificent espresso for a passing robot loader, which had no mouth, and provided Leo with hot water. The loader held its cup appreciatively. “Excellent aroma,” he said. “Excellent insult,” Lala replied.

Tara sprang forward to investigate, caught her sleeve on a chair, and recovered with the dignity of someone pretending to demonstrate a new exercise. “It recognizes hostile energy! I'm putting that in my Handy Dandy Notebook.” DeNae rescued the sugar bowl from Tara's elbow. “Put 'don't dismantle the kitchen before breakfast' underneath it.” Julie, examining the maintenance screen, tilted her head. “Leo, yesterday you selected a setting called 'courtesy acknowledgment' and switched it off.” He frowned. “Unnecessary processing.” “Apparently,” Julie said, “it was doing necessary processing of you.”

Laura picked up the green filament with a damp cloth. Under the light, its tip curled towards the machine. “This was attached to something. Could removing it have hurt?” Leo opened his mouth, but Oksana gently laid the original operating guide beside him. “Before deciding what an unfamiliar part does, it helps to discover what it belongs to.” I pointed to a blinking diagram showing the brewing chamber linked to a green branching symbol. “In aviation, we have a technical term for removing parts before identifying them.” “What?” Leo asked. “Expensive.”

His first attempt at reconciliation involved premium beans. The machine ground them and delivered another espresso to the loader. His second involved polishing its copper casing. It displayed COSMETIC IMPROVEMENTS DO NOT RESOLVE OPEN ISSUES. His third was a firmware reset, which I interrupted by closing the toolbox. Lala leaned against the counter. “Have you tried switching your personality off and back on?” Laura touched his arm before he could reply. “Just put back what you removed. Then ask.”

With surprising care, Leo restored the filament to its moist little socket and reactivated the courtesy setting. A warm green pulse moved beneath the copper. “I shouldn't have assumed you were defective,” he muttered. Nothing happened. “And?” prompted DeNae. Leo stared at us, defeated by an appliance and a committee. “May I have a coffee, please?” The grinder purred. Rich brown coffee poured into his cup, crowned with a foam pattern resembling a small wrench. Tara clasped her notebook to her chest. “Light, Love, and beverage diplomacy!”

Leo took one cautious sip. His shoulders relaxed by approximately half an inch. “A user-recognition system,” he explained. “It disliked the maintenance changes.” “And being called a glorified kettle,” I reminded him. He looked sharply at the machine. Its display changed to APOLOGY ACCEPTED. That evening, I noticed him leave a fresh cup beneath its spout before going to bed, ready for morning. The loader's espresso remained untouched on a shelf. Nobody had the heart to throw it away.

DAY 2 — “PHYSICS CANNOT BE WRONG”
FOUND: Ammeter — “Physics of Saturn” collection
After eating breakfast with a courteous nod, Leo retreated to the laboratory, where he expected numbers to behave better than kitchen equipment. Beyond the windows, Saturn's storms turned slowly beneath us, immense and silent. Inside, glass instruments hummed among coils of pale metal. Leo selected the Ammeter , checked its leads, inspected its measuring circuit, and connected it to a test lamp. “Electric current,” he said happily. “Something objective.” I pulled up a chair. “I admire a man who can begin a second disaster with renewed enthusiasm.”

The lamp shone steadily. Its only power lead carried three amperes towards it. So far, so reasonable. Then the arrow reversed, indicating three amperes flowing away from the lamp, although the lamp remained equally bright. Leo checked the connections and repeated the experiment. Then again. By lunchtime, calculations covered the bench, the same impossible result glowed on the display, and Leo had begun addressing the instrument in the measured voice normally reserved for someone blocking a doorway.

“Either the lamp is generating power,” he said, “or this meter is wrong.” Tara bent over it, her makeshift foil headband reflecting blue light. “Or tomorrow is lending electricity today.” She wrote that down before anyone could object. DeNae set sandwiches on the only clear corner of the bench. “If tomorrow is paying, ask whether it covers groceries.” Julie studied the readings she had neatly recorded. “The reversal happens shortly before someone touches the adjustment dial. Every time.” Leo withdrew his approaching hand. The arrow immediately changed direction.

Lala reached for the dial. I caught her wrist. “We have discussed this.” “Yes, but the machine hasn't heard my side.” As she leaned forward, the meter reversed again. Laura moved closer without reaching, and its needle settled into a gentle tremble. “Perhaps it's responding to what we're about to do,” she said. Oksana placed a second lamp beside the first. “A useful experiment might be to change the surroundings while leaving the instrument alone.” “You brought another lamp?” I asked. “And more sandwiches,” she said. That was our director: prepared for both kinds of darkness.

We found the clue beneath the bench. While retrieving Tara's pencil, I spotted a faint green glow where the lamp's base touched the worktop. A thread as fine as spider silk ran from a seam in the table into its casing. Leo lifted the lamp onto an insulating stand. It dimmed, the ammeter's arrow pointed steadily inward, and ordinary arithmetic returned. When he set it down again, the lamp brightened and sent current back through its supposedly only supply wire. Julie smiled. “Your closed system appears to have another door.”

Leo crouched beside the glowing seam. “An auxiliary distribution network,” he said. “The bench is supplying power through an unrecorded connection. The lamp draws what it needs and returns the surplus through the test lead.” He visibly recovered. Physics remained innocent. Naturally, so did Leo. “The meter was correct,” Laura observed gently. “It was measuring something we hadn't accounted for.” Tara added FURNITURE ELECTRICITY to her notebook. DeNae moved the sandwiches onto a tray. “Then nobody spill mustard on the power station.”

The apparent prediction remained harder to explain. Each time a hand approached the controls, a green pulse raced through the bench before the meter changed. Leo proposed proximity sensors. I considered that plausible enough, although proximity sensors rarely seemed to become more nervous around one particular twin. On our way out, Lala waved both hands dramatically above the apparatus. The ammeter displayed PLEASE CHOOSE A DIFFERENT HOBBY. “Now that,” I said, steering her toward dinner, “is a precision instrument.”

Day 2:
After finally managing to drink a cup of coffee, Leo decided to forget the weird coffee maker affair and concentrate on his main job, which was to calibrate and repair, if needed, the measuring devices on the Saturn research station. He would start with something relatively simple, the precision scales.
He got a little pack of tiny metal balls from his tool box. He knew that each one of them should weigh 1.5 grams under Saturn gravity conditions. He placed the first ball on the scales and it read exactly 1.5 g. Excellent, so far so good. Leo added another tiny ball, obviously expecting the device to show 3 g. However …….. It was impossible! On the display window of the scales, he read 1 g. Leo rubbed his eyes, looked again and … still 1 g. He removed the ball, placed it on the scales again,… 1 g. He decided to add a third ball. Now, the reading was…. 0.5 g. He added a fourth ball and surely enough the display was ….. 0 g.
Leo thought he was going mad. Four balls each weighing 1.5 g, but when added together they weighed nothing, zero, nada, zilch. What was going on? Leo went to his computer and started searching. He read about dark matter. He didn’t really understand it, but it seemed that its presence would have caused an increase in mass, not a decrease. He read about antimatter, but that would have also increased the weight. He read about anti-gravity. It was a concept that had been considered in the past, but now it was confined to the world of science fiction. But it seemed to him that only anti-gravity could explained this seemingly impossible phenomenon.
Leo needed to consult a quantum physicist, but there none on the station at the moment. What was he going to do?
