THE PATIENT WHO WASN’T ON THE LIST

Found item: Surgical Table — “Sinister Experiments” collection
The first time Viktor Schwartzwald tested his surgical table, it tucked him in.
This was not the breakthrough he had intended.
Its mechanical arms were supposed to hold patients still. Instead, they removed his spectacles, supplied a cushion, and pulled a blanket up to his chin.
Then the table began to rock.
His assistant, Ada, peered over her glasses.
“Any last words?”
“Get me out.”
A brass hand patted his shoulder.
Ada reached the hallway before laughing.
Unfortunately, the acoustics were excellent.
Viktor filed the plans in the Amazing Mistakes Folder:
SURGICAL TABLE. EXCESSIVELY AFFECTIONATE.
He labeled the table:
DISMANTLE FOR PARTS.

That night, thunder shook the Animatorium. Lightning flashed through the green specimen tanks.
Something scratched beneath the gears.
“Loose belt,” Viktor said.
It whimpered.
“An unhappy one,” Ada observed.
A little brown dog crouched beneath the machinery, soaked through, a broken rope trailing from his collar.
Ada offered water. Viktor sacrificed his last biscuit.
The dog wouldn’t budge.
Then thunder cracked overhead.
He bolted onto the surgical table.
His paw struck the lever.
Six metal arms unfolded.
Ada lunged for the emergency switch.
But one arm spread a blanket. Another lowered a cushion. The smallest rested a brass palm against the trembling dog.
The table rocked.
Lightning flashed again.
The brass hand stayed.
Slowly, the dog lowered his chin.
Ada pointed beneath the table, where a violet bulb glowed.
“Your trembling detector. You wired it to the rocking mechanism.”
Viktor followed the wires.
Weeks of calculations. One wrong socket.
On the cushion, the dog sighed in his sleep.
Viktor tore the dismantling label in half.

The groundskeeper recognized the collar at dawn.
The dog belonged to Mr. Bell, the elderly clock repairer. A tree had smashed his roof. Neighbors had rescued him, but his dog had vanished.
“He’s been searching all night.”
Mr. Bell arrived in borrowed slippers.
“Pip?”
The table lowered itself and folded its arms away.
Pip flew into his embrace.
The old man sank onto the table’s edge.
“My wife used to sit with him through storms,” he whispered. “Since she died, he gets so frightened.”
He tried to fasten the broken rope. His fingers shook.
A brass hand unfolded.
Viktor almost stopped it.
Instead, he watched it settle against the old man’s back.
Mr. Bell leaned into it.
Ada fetched a chair. Viktor put the kettle on.
The screwdrivers remained untouched.

That afternoon, Ada opened the archive.
“Shall I record the wiring error?”
“Yes,” Viktor said. “Very precisely.”
“So we don’t make it again?”
He glanced toward the table, where an old man and his dog slept beneath one blanket.
“So we do.”

 The Hour Before Disaster
Living Room – Hartley-Vane Manor, Imperial Russia

Alfred Petrovich had served as Head Butler of the Hartley-Vane estate for forty years, during which he had never been late, never misplaced a teaspoon, and never permitted a napkin to lean more than two degrees from its proper position. The servants whispered that he had swallowed an arshin, the old Russian measuring stick, because his back was so straight that even his shadow stood at attention. His employer, Lord Konstantin Hartley-Vane, considered Alfred the finest butler in Russia, although he privately suspected the man had been born wearing white gloves. On the afternoon of the grand autumn reception, Alfred opened the family safe to retrieve the magnificent platinum dinner service, treasured for six generations. He inspected each piece, then stopped breathing. One platinum fork was missing! Its matching companion lay alone in the velvet-lined case, like a grieving widow abandoned at the altar. Alfred's left eyebrow rose nearly a quarter of an inch. In forty years, no servant had ever witnessed such an emotional outburst.

"THE FAMILY WILL NOT SURVIVE THIS DISGRACE!" Alfred declared to the empty room. Within minutes, the entire household stood assembled before him. Grigori, the footman, dropped a silver tray. Dunya, the senior housemaid, crossed herself three times. Cook Matryona appeared carrying a rolling pin, having misunderstood the summons as a warning of burglars. "A platinum fork," Alfred announced, his voice colder than a Siberian January, "has disappeared. Until it is recovered, nobody leaves this house!" Grigori nervously suggested using an ordinary silver fork instead. Alfred turned so slowly that the unfortunate footman had time to reconsider his entire existence. "Grigori," he replied, "we are serving the Governor-General, not feeding chickens in a barn." With precisely fifty-three minutes remaining before the first guests arrived, Alfred began his investigation.

The kitchen yielded nothing except a suspiciously large quantity of missing pastries concealed in Grigori's pockets. The library produced three overdue books, a sleeping cat, and Lord Konstantin's secret collection of dreadful French love poetry. In the drawing room, Alfred discovered Dunya standing on a chair, attempting to retrieve something from behind a portrait of the Lord's formidable grandmother. "What are you doing?" he demanded. "Looking for the fork, sir!" she squeaked "Behind the Countess?" Alfred asked incredulously. "Well, sir, she always did take things that didn't belong to her." Alfred considered this explanation for exactly two seconds before ordering her down. Meanwhile, Matryona had begun interrogating the kitchen staff with her rolling pin, and Grigori was examining the fireplace with such enthusiasm that he accidentally climbed halfway up the chimney. Forty minutes remained. Alfred's posture had become so rigid that the grandfather clock seemed to straighten whenever he passed.

Then, from the Living Room, came an extraordinary sound: a loud metallic TWANG, followed by a muffled "OW!" Alfred entered to discover Lord Konstantin standing beside his favorite upholstered armchair, rubbing his backside and looking deeply offended. "Alfred!" the Lord exclaimed. "That blasted chair has attacked me again!" Alfred noticed something peculiar. The Lord's enormous hunting hound, Prince Boris, was hiding beneath the sofa, looking remarkably pleased with himself. On the floor lay a cushion, several tufts of horsehair stuffing, and a length of ribbon. "My Lord," Alfred asked with terrible calm, "why is your chair making noises usually associated with a blacksmith's workshop?" Lord Konstantin turned pink. "Well, you see, Alfred, yesterday I was attempting to retrieve a biscuit Boris had stolen. I couldn't reach beneath the chair, so I borrowed something long and narrow from that velvet box you left open while polishing the silver."

Alfred's face became the color of boiled beetroot. "You borrowed... WHAT, my Lord?" Konstantin swallowed. "A fork. A rather handsome one, actually. I poked about beneath the cushion, but the blasted dog lunged for the biscuit, I dropped the fork, and it disappeared into the upholstery. I meant to tell you, but then the Governor-General's invitation arrived, and I quite forgot." Alfred closed his eyes. Somewhere in the distance, a raven croaked ominously. "And the ribbon, my Lord?" he asked. "Ah! Well, I tried fishing it out with a ribbon tied to my walking stick. That didn't work either." At that precise moment, Prince Boris emerged, seized the dangling ribbon, and gave it a tremendous tug. The chair cushion flipped upward, the hidden fork sprang from the torn upholstery like a silver grasshopper, and the priceless platinum fork sailed through the air and landed, prongs first, in Lord Konstantin's magnificent powdered wig, which he had placed on a nearby bust of Catherine the Great.

For several seconds, nobody moved. The platinum fork stood proudly from the wig like a miniature trident, giving the Empress the appearance of having invented a new and rather alarming hairstyle. Grigori made a strangled noise. Dunya bit her apron. Matryona, arriving with her rolling pin, took one look and collapsed into a chair, laughing so hard she could scarcely breathe. Lord Konstantin stared at the wig, then at Alfred. "Well," he observed, "at least we know where the damned thing is!" Alfred approached the bust with the solemnity of a priest handling a sacred relic. He extracted the fork, examined it for damage, and polished it with his handkerchief. "My Lord," he said in a voice trembling with suppressed emotion, "may I respectfully suggest that in the future, when retrieving biscuits, Your Lordship employs a servant rather than the family inheritance?" Konstantin nodded meekly. Then he added, "Of course, Alfred. Though you must admit, it made a rather splendid landing." Alfred's eyebrow twitched. It was the closest he had come to murder in forty years of service.

✨Conclusion — From Alfred's Private Notebook

October 16. A matter of grave domestic importance was successfully resolved at Hartley-Vane Manor. The platinum dinner service was restored to its rightful completeness precisely seven minutes before the arrival of the Governor-General. The reception proceeded flawlessly. No guest suspected that the honor of six generations had recently been lodged in a powdered wig upon the head of Catherine the Great.

Lord Konstantin has been instructed never again to use platinum cutlery for canine negotiations. The chair has been sent for repairs. Prince Boris remains under observation.

Throughout the evening, Alfred stood with his shoulders slightly broader, his chin slightly higher, and the unmistakable bearing of a general who had saved an empire from destruction. The maids whispered about his mysterious triumph for an entire week.

And beneath his final entry, in handwritten so small that only he could read it, Alfred added:

"Tomorrow, I shall have the family safe fitted with a second lock. The first key shall remain with me. The second shall most certainly NOT remain with His Lordship."

PS Grigori is forbidden from suggesting silver forks ever again.

👑💜 THE HOUR BEFORE DISASTER 🍽⏰

PART ONE — TARA: THE CASE OF THE PLATINUM PRONG

Location: Mystery Manor — Living Room

Time Until Catastrophe: 60 Minutes

There are three things I have learned during my adventures at Mystery Manor.

One: Never trust a door that opens by itself.

Two: Never let DeNae see the household grocery bill.

Three: If a butler looks like he’s about to declare war on the silverware, RUN.

Naturally, we arrived just as Alfred, the Hartley-Vane family’s butler of forty years, announced that civilization was collapsing.

“THE PLATINUM FORK IS MISSING!”

A maid gasped.

A footman dropped a tray.

Somewhere, a grandfather clock struck eleven with unnecessarily dramatic timing.

I immediately opened my Handy Dandy Journal.

CASE #427: THE GREAT PLATINUM PRONG CONSPIRACY.

Suspects: Everyone with fingers.

Motive: Unknown.

Possible alien involvement: Not ruled out.

DeNae peered over my shoulder.

“Tara, it’s a fork.”

“That’s EXACTLY what they want you to think.”

Alfred appeared beside us, looking as though he had swallowed a curtain rod.

“Ladies, this is a platinum dining fork from a six-generation heirloom collection. Its disappearance threatens the dignity of this household!”

DeNae folded her arms.

“Does it threaten lunch?”

“No, madam.”

“Then we still have time to be reasonable.”

I ignored this outrageous dismissal of a potentially international cutlery conspiracy and began investigating the Living Room.

Behind the velvet curtains? Nothing.

Beneath the antique sofa? Three buttons, a marble, and something that might once have been a biscuit.

Inside the porcelain vase? A spider.

A VERY judgmental spider.

Then I spotted something suspicious.

The enormous portrait of Lady Beatrice Hartley-Vane hung slightly crooked above the fireplace.

“DeNae! Look! The painting has moved!”

“Or someone dusted it.”

“SUSPICIOUS DUSTING!”

I climbed onto a footstool and examined the frame.

Behind it was a tiny brass lever.

Naturally, I pulled it.

CLICK!

A hidden compartment opened in the wall.

Inside sat a small velvet-lined box, an ancient invitation, and a handwritten note.

“For emergencies only. Lady Beatrice knows where the finest treasures belong.”

I gasped.

“DeNae! We have uncovered a secret society!”

“You’ve uncovered a box, Tara.”

“A SECRET SOCIETY WITH A BOX!”

Inside the box was a tiny silver key.

Alfred turned three shades paler.

“That key belonged to Lady Beatrice! She was notorious for hiding valuables in the most unconventional locations.”

I grinned.

“Excellent! A wealthy eccentric with secret compartments! Finally, someone in this family has a personality!”

DeNae studied the invitation.

“Tara, this was for a reception held fifty years ago.”

“Exactly! A half-century conspiracy!”

“No. Look at the handwritten note on the back.”

She read aloud:

“Never let the guests discover where I keep my little treasure. Especially not beneath their noses.”

We stared at each other.

Then slowly turned toward Lady Beatrice’s magnificent portrait.

Her painted smile suddenly looked rather smug.

“I KNEW IT!” I shouted.

Alfred clutched his chest.

“Madam, PLEASE refrain from shouting. The family reputation is already hanging by a thread!”

I snapped my journal shut.

“Alfred, fear not. We have forty minutes, one mysterious key, and the two finest investigators in Mystery Manor.”

DeNae raised an eyebrow.

“One investigator. One sister trying to prevent property damage.”

“TEAMWORK!”

And with that, we headed toward the most suspicious piece of furniture in the entire room.

A gigantic antique grandfather clock.

Which, I should mention, had just begun ticking…

BACKWARD.

To be continued in Part Two — where DeNae discovers that solving a mystery is much easier when your younger sister stops touching things.

💚👑 THE HOUR BEFORE DISASTER 🍽⏰

PART TWO — DeNAE: THE FORK, THE CLOCK, AND THE FAMILY SCANDAL

Location: Mystery Manor — Living Room

Time Until Catastrophe: 38 Minutes

Let me explain something about my younger sister.

Tara can enter an ordinary living room, discover a misplaced fork, and somehow conclude that aliens, secret societies, and international espionage are involved.

Meanwhile, I am usually trying to determine whether anyone has eaten lunch.

Priorities, people.

Unfortunately, today we were helping Alfred, a butler so tightly wound that I suspected his bow tie was holding his entire nervous system together.

And now we were standing before a grandfather clock.

Which was ticking backward.

Tara was practically vibrating.

“DENAE! TIME TRAVEL!”

“No, Tara. Old clock.”

“ALIEN TIME TRAVEL!”

“Old. Clock.”

Alfred cleared his throat.

“Lady Beatrice was rather fond of mechanical curiosities.”

“Was she also fond of hiding forks?” I asked.

“Madam, such behavior would be highly irregular.”

I looked around the room.

“Alfred, we’ve got a secret wall compartment, a backward clock, and a portrait of a woman who looks like she’d hide her own birthday cake just to watch people panic.”

He considered this.

“Lady Beatrice was… spirited.”

“There’s the understatement of the century.”

I examined the clock while Tara enthusiastically documented the possibility of an interdimensional cutlery-smuggling operation.

A tiny keyhole was hidden beneath the brass pendulum.

“Hand me that key, Tara.”

She held it up triumphantly.

“BEHOLD! THE KEY TO THE PLATINUM EMPIRE!”

“Just hand it over before Alfred faints.”

I inserted the key.

CLICK.

A small door opened at the base of the clock.

Inside was a folded piece of lace, a faded photograph, and a peculiar handwritten card.

“To my darling descendants: Should the family ever become too impressed with its own importance, remember that a fork is only a fork. Love, Beatrice.”

I laughed.

“Oh, I LIKE this woman!”

Tara looked disappointed.

“That’s it? No alien coordinates?”

“Keep looking.”

The photograph showed Lady Beatrice standing beside the grandfather clock, holding a silver serving tray.

But something in the picture caught my eye.

On the tray sat a tiny mechanical bird.

I slowly turned toward the mantelpiece.

There it was.

A magnificent gold-and-emerald mechanical peacock, sitting beneath a glass dome.

Its feathers were spread proudly, and its jeweled eyes looked almost as judgmental as Alfred.

“Alfred, who cleans that thing?”

“Only I do, madam. It is one of the family’s most treasured heirlooms.”

“And when was it last moved?”

He stiffened.

“This morning, when I was preparing the reception decorations.”

Tara gasped.

“THE BUTLER DID IT!”

Alfred looked ready to expire.

“Madam! I have served this family for FOUR DECADES!”

“Relax, Alfred,” I said. “She’s been waiting her whole life to say that.”

I lifted the glass dome.

The peacock’s jeweled tail contained several delicate metal slots.

And wedged between two emerald feathers was something shiny.

THE MISSING PLATINUM FORK!

Tara shrieked.

“I KNEW IT! THE PEACOCK IS A SMUGGLER!”

I carefully pulled the fork free.

Beneath it was a tiny scrap of polishing cloth.

And suddenly everything made sense.

That morning, Alfred had been polishing the platinum dinner set beside the decorative peacock. While arranging the clock and decorations, he had apparently laid the fork across the peacock’s feathers.

The fork slipped into the mechanical tail, where it became firmly wedged.

The culprit wasn’t a thief.

It was Alfred himself.

I looked at the poor man.

He looked at the fork.

Tara looked at both of us.

Then she whispered, much too loudly:

“THE BUTLER REALLY DID DO IT!”

Alfred swayed.

I grabbed his arm.

“Easy there, Alfred. We’re not losing a forty-year employee over poultry-shaped furniture.”

Tara opened her Handy Dandy Journal.

CASE #427 — SOLVED!

Missing item: Platinum Fork.

Location: Inside the mechanical peacock’s tail on the Living Room mantelpiece.

Responsible party: Alfred, accidentally.

Accomplice: One suspiciously fancy bird.

Alien involvement: Still under investigation.

“Tara,” I warned.

“What? I’m being thorough!”

With twenty minutes remaining, Alfred hurried away to complete the table settings.

I helped straighten the silverware while Tara attempted to interview the peacock.

“WHERE WERE YOU ON THE MORNING OF OCTOBER SEVENTEENTH?”

The peacock remained silent.

“Suspicious,” Tara muttered.

By the time the guests arrived, the platinum dinner set gleamed beneath the chandeliers.

Every fork sat perfectly beside its matching companion.

Alfred greeted the guests with his usual magnificent dignity.

Not one person suspected that moments earlier he had nearly declared a national emergency over a utensil.

Later that evening, I noticed him writing in his private notebook.

Naturally, Tara peeked over his shoulder.

ALFRED’S NOTEBOOK — AN EVENT OF HISTORICAL IMPORTANCE

“Today, the honor of the Hartley-Vane household was preserved through extraordinary vigilance, discipline, and the assistance of two highly unconventional ladies.”

“The platinum dinner service was restored before the reception.”

“The family reputation remains untarnished.”

“The mechanical peacock is henceforth forbidden from participating in formal dining preparations.”

Tara smiled proudly.

“We saved civilization.”

I picked up my handbag.

“We found a fork, Tara.”

“IN AN INTERNATIONAL CONSPIRACY!”

“Inside a peacock.”

“AN INTERNATIONAL PEACOCK CONSPIRACY!”

I sighed.

“Come on. Happy hour.”

She immediately snapped her journal closed.

“FINALLY! A MISSION WITH CLEAR OBJECTIVES!”

And as we left the Manor, I heard Alfred whisper something I never expected from a man of such impeccable manners.

“Bloody bird.”

For once, Tara and I agreed completely.

CASE CLOSED. RECEPTION SAVED. HAPPY HOUR PRESERVED.

🎹 The Fork That Wanted to Sing 🍽😤
📍 Living Room
The trail began at the safe.
Alfred noticed it only because Alfred noticed everything. A faint shimmer of silver polish was rising from the empty slot of the velvet case and drifting in the afternoon light. It glittered along the carpet, down the corridor, and straight into the Living Room.
Alfred stopped in the doorway. The room looked like the morning after a kids' sleepover.
The floor lamp lay on its side. The grey satin throw was crumpled in the middle of the floor, as if someone had kicked off their covers in a hurry. A key lay under the piano bench. And on the good armchair sat a large black spider, watching him like a cat that knows it isn't allowed on the couch and doesn't care.
"Out," said Alfred.
The spider did not move. Alfred let it be. He had more important battles to fight.
Then he saw the suitcase. It was small and brown, sitting beside the chess table so conspicuously that it clearly wanted to be found. Inside were one sock, a cheese sandwich, a compass, and a note in careful pencil:
Dear Family. I have gone to sea. Do not look for me. I am very sorry about the fork. — Teddy (Edward)
Alfred read it twice. Teddy was nine. Teddy got seasick in the bath.
The note said sorry. It did not say where.
Alfred searched with military precision. He checked behind the statue, between the books and inside the display cabinet. He opened the grandfather clock, which went on ticking as if nothing had happened. He found nothing, and forty-seven minutes remained.
Then Miss Pemberly, the hired pianist, swept in to warm up. She played a lovely chord, then a single middle C.
Plink — THUNK.
The room went quiet.
She tried again.
THUNK.
"This instrument," she announced, "has been flat all afternoon. I told the young gentleman earlier, if only I had a tuning fork—"
Alfred closed his eyes.
He lifted the lid. There, across the strings, shining as if it had every right to be there, lay six generations of Hartley-Vane dignity, pinning middle C in place.
He pieced it together in one cold, perfect second. Teddy had heard tuning fork and decided, with the kind of logic only nine-year-olds have, that the best fork in the house would make the best tuning fork. He had opened the safe (combination: his own birthday; Alfred made a note). He had struck the fork on the piano, leaned in to hear it sing, and dropped it. After a desperate attempt to fish it out, he had knocked over the lamp, hidden under the throw, written his goodbye note, packed for a life at sea, and then lost his nerve halfway to the front door.
A small sniff came from behind the blue velvet curtain.
Alfred lifted the fork out with two white-gloved fingers. Then, after making sure nobody was watching, he did something improper: he tapped it against the piano lid and held it to his ear. It gave a clean, high, silvery ring.
"Did it work?" whispered the curtain.
"Master Edward," said Alfred, "it is an excellent fork. It is a dreadful tuning fork. Running away, you'll find, is much the same: it sounds wonderful until you actually try it."
A pause. "Are you going to tell?"
Alfred straightened his cuffs. "A butler, Master Edward, sees nothing. It is the entire point of the profession. Now unpack that suitcase before your mother finds it, and we shall never speak of this again."
📓 From the personal notebook of Alfred, Butler to the Hartley-Vanes:
17th October. Platinum fork recovered from inside the grand piano, wedged against middle C. Cause: musical ambition. Culprit: pardoned. Safe combination: changed. The Royal Navy has lost a promising recruit. Note: the piano was, in fact, flat. 🎩

HIS LORDSHIP CANNOT STAND UP
Found item: Platinum Lobster Cracker
Forty-seven minutes before the reception, Alfred discovered that the family platinum was incomplete.
Forty-six minutes before the reception, Lord Hartley-Vane asked whether dinner could be served on trays.
“In our laps,” he clarified.
Alfred stood beside the open velvet case, one white-gloved hand suspended above the empty compartment.
“Someone,” he said, “has taken the lobster cracker.”
“How unfortunate,” said His Lordship, settling deeper into the Living Room armchair. “Perhaps serve soup.”
Alfred summoned the staff.
The maids emptied their pockets. The footman searched beneath the piano. Cook arrived carrying a rolling pin, having misunderstood the phrase bring everyone responsible.
His Lordship remained seated.
“Will you assist us, sir?”
“I am supervising.”
“From there?”
“It affords an excellent view.”
Alfred examined the drinks trolley, the bookcases, and the space behind the folding screen. The grandfather clock ticked with intolerable indifference.
Then the youngest maid approached His Lordship with a cushion.
“Perhaps you’d be more comfortable—”
“NO.”
Everyone stopped.
His Lordship smiled.
“Perfectly comfortable.”
Alfred dismissed the staff.
Then he closed the Living Room doors.
“Stand up, sir.”
“I dislike your tone.”
“I dislike the disappearance of six generations of platinum.”
A small metallic clink came from beneath His Lordship’s jacket.
Alfred shut his eyes.
“Where?”
“At the back.”
“Of what?”
“Me.”
Behind the folding screen, the truth emerged.
His Lordship had decided to wear his wedding trousers. Lady Hartley-Vane had suggested a larger pair.
He had suggested that a gentleman of his age knew how to dress himself.
Then he had bent to retrieve a cufflink.
“The waistband went,” he admitted. “Rather suddenly.”
“And the lobster cracker?”
“I needed something with a firm grip.”
The missing heirloom was clamping the torn waistband together, its handles secured with a pink hair ribbon.
Alfred regarded it in silence.
“It was within reach,” His Lordship added.
“So was the bell.”
“I didn’t want a fuss.”
From beyond the screen came Lady Hartley-Vane’s voice.
“How is avoiding the fuss going, darling?”
She handed Alfred a larger pair of trousers.
He accepted them without comment.
Twenty minutes later, the platinum gleamed on the table, His Lordship greeted the guests upright, and Alfred supervised dinner with the bearing of a victorious general.
When the lobster course arrived, Lady Hartley-Vane glanced at her husband.
“Shall I?”
“Please don’t.”
She reached for the cracker.
He flinched.
That night, Alfred opened his personal notebook.
Platinum recovered. Reception successful.
After consideration, he added:
His Lordship’s measurements revised. At his request, the trousers have been blamed.
